Need some help with the lingo: what does it mean for a committee to be "closed" ? And to be "closed for Democrats" ?

[–] lolola@lemmy.blahaj.zone 46 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I found a video. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_yNr0xeWVvE

I think he's saying "composed of", not "closed for". He's off-mic in the audience so it's hard to tell. But I think that makes more sense than "closed for".

He's implying that Republicans weren't allowed to come because the Democrats wouldn't let them in. That would be a closed hearing, I guess. In actuality, the Republicans started their own January 6th investigation. They're choosing not to be on this one.

https://www.cnn.com/2026/01/06/politics/january-6-anniversary-congress-political-divide

Ahead of Tuesday’s hearing, GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk, who is leading the Republican-led counter-investigation, called the former January 6 committee a β€œpartisan exercise designed to advance a narrative to target President Trump and his political allies.”

They were trying to insinuate that it was a witch hunt. It wasn't.

Took me a bit to work out too. The crowd member thinks that the committee blocked Repub inclusion, and the response is clarifying that it's not closed to anyone, Repubs just refused to be on the committee.

None of the picture makes sense at all

Here's a link to this hearing on C-Span, with written transcript, if you want to try to make sense of this.

E: I totally biffed it!

[–] SGforce@lemmy.ca 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

??? They didn't say "no Republicans participated in the Jan 6th attack"

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

Isn't that what the rep said "Becuase no Republicans participated", but the hearing was closed to democrats. Maybe I misunderstood

I would read it as "It's not closed, it's just that no R's participated so it looks that way"

I think its saying no republicans participated in the committee? But closed to doesnt make sense in that context.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Yeah I re read it... still not computing with me

[–] elbucho@lemmy.world 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The spectator was under the impression that it was a closed hearing - that is, a hearing that is limited to only certain select members (in this case, all Democrats). The spectator wanted to know why it was a closed hearing that only involved Democrats on the panel.

Bennie Thompson told him essentially that it wasn't a closed hearing, that Republicans were also completely free to join it, but none of them did.

Thank you :)

The headline is β€œHOUSE DEMOCRATS MARK 5th ANNIVERSARY OF JAN. 6 ATTACK ON U.S. CAPITOL”

Rep. Bennie G Thompson, who is quoted above, is a Democratic representative of Mississippi, so I take it a hearing was held and no Republicans chose to participate.
