Boycotts:
Your music?
Point me to the location on your drive where you are storing this data.
Sorry if that came off as harsh but there is a better way. Learning to self host a music server using online guides or dare i say it a llm is trivial these days.
You can stream your music free from any subscription with zero cost as long as you want to put in some work.
No worries, I get it and understand it is not 'my music' but I can't imagine that the database of songs I liked is much burden on their server. Either way, the point was the threathening messaging they use.
Its silly
Should instead encourage you to come back later by saying your playlists and such will be saved for whenever youre ready to come back
See this is what I don’t get, like I accept I may be outside the target market or whatever but surely it’s basic psychology that consumers react negatively to this type of “keep paying or loss it all” type shit. Your “no worries, it’ll all be here when you’re ready to resume the subscription” is so much more palatable aka likely to make money, I would have thought.
The visceral reaction to that message by the average person would be "wait, but I don't want to lose it all!"
You’re right, it’s unhinged. And a lot of people I talk to about this stuff in real life unthinkingly respond along the lines of “You can’t really blame them, it’s good business practice.”
I can and do blame them. They don’t have to be that way, they made a decision and me hating them is not only my right, but an obvious conclusion. I’ll go a step further and hold a grudge against this corporation in the form of a personal boycott. If more people did that maybe they would design for people like us and not the ones willing to shrug off any slight and open their wallets wider.
Tech companies have zero respect towards their users and they are so self absorbed they don’t even realise it themselves how blatend it is. And more and more these kind of messages are going to be ai generated also.
You complying is the norm. Same thing with microsoft putting ads in your existing start menu and uploading your files to the cloud. The fact that people actually rely on their digital services to live is not a responsibility but a market advantage.
I'm curious what the point of streaming it is if it's all files you have on a drive somewhere anyways. Why not just have all the music on your phone? I've got dozens of Gigs of music on my phone and that's plenty.
If your phone can fit all your music then yes that is the way to go.
Its also what i have done for years, and i still have a local collection because availability is a priority.
But when you collect flacs and just your pink Floyd collection grows over 200gb you need a better solution.
A huge help was the fact that switching to linux ment i couldn’t sync my iphone with iTunes anymore, or i have to go back to windows for just that, really gave me the extra push to set navidrome up.
That's something that I got easy. I don't listen to a big range of bands /styles. Downloading it all and setting it up on Plex was quite easy and I'm very happy with it.
I was on Deezer before and can't complain, though. Really liked their service
That’s why use Zotify. When I ditch my subscription, at least I’ll have all the songs I wanted.
They rely on you thinking this, it’s a blackmail tactic. Use a service to export all the libraries out.
Good luck with Qobuz. I moved. I found it average unfortunately due to clunky interface, drop outs and it drops my Bluetooth all the time. I use my music a lot in the car I can’t keep stopping to deal with this stuff.
I’m gonna start self hosting.
I bounced from Spotify to Qobuz to Tidal. Spotify is so unethical I had to leave. Qobuz was missing a significant portion of my library and the interface had too many issues. I was happy on Tidal for a while, then I found out they dropped about 10% of the music from my favorites list without telling me or keeping a record of what songs were missing.
Can’t really talk about it on Lemmy though because the self-hosting crowd is very aggressive here, and “I don’t want to play music I downloaded because constant new music discovery is important to me” is an unacceptable answer.
Yeh I dropped Spotify for the same reason. I am trying to support the non racist and non greedy options.
I am moving to self host but my libraries are old school. I listen to set playlists. I’ll miss just being able to pick a random song.
It’s a pity there isn't a decent alternative out there. Good luck with your search.
Thanks! Someday, my prince will come.
At least the library transfer apps are pretty good.
I'm pretty sure the music software wouldn't be related to the Bluetooth connection dropping.
There two issue. One with drop outs when I am out and about. That’s an app issue. It just stops. No reason.
The second is connecting to Bluetooth in the first place. I have to specify over and over where to play my music. Even then it often does not work and I have to restart the app.
When the two issues combine and your driving it’s not great.
I have used Hezel for a while now to backup and Soundiiz to transfer to Qobuz. I am not too fussed about it either if I were to lose it. It is just sad to see some megacorp going so low as to use these threathening tactics.
Qobuz is definitely not as a refined app as Apple Music. I will stick with them as they have announced some improvements to the app, and hopefully they will increase their team going forward.
Nice music collection ya got there. Be a real shame if something were to happen to it when you stop paying us...

First one's free, kid…
Hey while you're there you can delete that U2 album now. Its possible now ten years after the fact.
Surely there are tools to "mirror" your collection...
*Arr stack, now including Mixarr, makes leaving music services easy.
Yeah, I just ignore these types of nonsense threats. If you moved away your library and anything, it's just fearmongering. Hope you'll like Qobuz, OP!
Bummer was looking to move to them away from Spotify.
whyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
if you are going to accept the pain of transitioning, why go from one abusive relationship to another???
I hear ya, currently my server is redlining capacity due to scope creep and being overdue to upgrade. I’m mainly wanting to get away from Spotify due to them ripping off artist, ai (music/artist), and shady funding/investments and having a presence on Apple already.
I figured it’d be a Band-Aid until I can self host and already transferred all my shit over to Apple Music from Spotify with a handy built in tool. Just annoying that the Band-Aid solution is shorter term than expected because of shit like this.
For what it's worth, I have been making occasional backups with Hezel. Now I just moved to Qobuz, which provides Sondiiz. I believe the latter can also be used for other services.
This comment reads like satire making fun of silly app names
It's completely inscrutable to me.
Neat, thanks for the tips, I’ll check them out!
wait is this the kind of thing where you paid to have each song in the library like movies were for itunes??
Nah anything you buy on iTunes you do not need a subscription to access. This is basically their Spotify saying you’ll lose saved playlists.
oh. I mean. That seems like a given.
Yeah, it’s just a very threatening way to say the obvious that you won’t have access to the thing your paying for if you stop paying for it.
