I'm surprised it's not just Apple's Mail app with a skin like their Firefox is.

Is there no real Firefox for iOS? On Android, there is Firefox Klar (or Focus in English?), a rebranded WebView, but also a "real" Firefox with Gecko. But I've heard Apple is very gatekeepng when it comes to allowing other web browsers in their appstore.

Apple only permits its own web renderer. It does not allow other developers to make their own iOS web browsers with their own technology.

Apple is a jerk.

no longer true everywhere because in some places around the world, laws have forced Apple to change this

Just a few days ago I posted this article https://open-web-advocacy.org/blog/how_apples_key_tactic_could_prevent_japans_smartphone_act_from_improving_browser_competition/ on Lemmy where you can read more about the current state.

So far I am not aware of a single browser with a different engine, unfortunately.

Firefox have stated that for the time it would not be viable to develop to browsers with different engines for iOS at the moment. I start to feel that by the time Apple allows for a global role out, I have moved to GrapheneOS or something (just holding on to my mini for as long as possible).

Still waiting for that, yes

Yeah Firefox is just Safari on iOS.

[โ€“] flameleaf@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Safari with Firefox Sync support, so it can carry over bookmarks, tabs, and passwords from desktop

It's not entirely useless, but yeah, it could be a lot better

Firefox is made my Mozilla Corp, Thunderbird is MZLA a subsidiary or something, independent, nonprofit. They are funded by donations and can use FF as the base (well, not on Android which is an entirely different app) and the infrastructure

How is this relevant to the original comment? I'm curious.

like their Firefox is

2 different companies, 2 different products

Even more, Thunderbird Android is extremely new and not based on Firefox at all (based on AOSP email -> K9-Mail). Unlike Firefox Android which is Firefox.
