We're going to see a lot of recycled political cartoons from 2003.

[–] its_kim_love@lemmy.blahaj.zone 96 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Those who don't remember history are doomed to repeat their political cartoons.

[–] AntiBullyRanger@ani.social 46 points 1 month ago (1 children)

those of us that do, are doomed to witness it repeat itself.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

"Those that don't remember history are doomed to repeat it," is supposed to be cautionary, but MAGA treats it like a Game Plan.

[–] AntiBullyRanger@ani.social 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It’s a tried and true game plan for a century. Americans are just far too illiterate.

This third great depression is fascist fabrication.
And the world is letting it occur again.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

so much appeasement happening in the world right now

[–] AntiBullyRanger@ani.social 1 points 1 month ago

dunno what threats were demonstrated, but they are working

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 21 points 1 month ago

First one that came to mind was one I have an actual newspaper clipping of. Can't find it online. It's an image of the Iwo Jima Memorial, but they're pushing up a gas gauge from Empty.

[–] radix@lemmy.world 36 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And it was dated more than two weeks ago. Such a predictable man-child.

[–] semisimian@startrek.website 4 points 1 month ago

Luckovich is a badass.

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 31 points 1 month ago (7 children)

Did the oil derrick really need to be labeled?

[–] its_kim_love@lemmy.blahaj.zone 35 points 1 month ago

I knew what it was, but not that it's called an oil derrick. So maybe.

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 20 points 1 month ago

It could be ambiguous to a general audience. A Chevron logo would've been more elegant

[–] wander1236@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Without knowing the context of what's happening in Venezuela I'd probably think that's a radio/cell tower without the label and wonder what the army has to do with 5G in South America

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

I guess that's fair.

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's not a political cartoon if there's not a label on every relevant detail.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not every cartoon is by Ben Garrisson

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

Cool, but that doesn't help every other political-cartoon artist who's not Ben Garrison, does it?

[–] booly@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Today? Probably not.

More than 2 weeks ago, when this was published? In that context, based on what was common knowledge among the public then, I understand why he erred on the side of overexplaining that the U.S. military was on the cusp of escalating to an invasion.

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

But the context of Venezuela having the most oil of any nation didn't change in those two weeks.

Given it looks as much like a radio mast as an oil derrick, maybe.

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

O say can you drill, by the dawn’s early light,

What so proudly we hailed at the wellhead’s last gleaming,

Whose drill bits and flood lamps through the perilous fight,

O’er the mud pits we watched, were so gallantly reaming?

And the flare stack's red glare, the crude bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our rig was still there;

O say does that oil-spattered derrick yet stand,

O’er our new vassal serfs and their occupied land?

[–] WraithGear@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

what is with political cartoons and labeling the thing it is? i get if you really want to hammer the allegory in and label it what it represents, though barely. but it’s a bit insulting. or is it an inside joke?

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Ben garrison would've labeled the ground, the soldiers, their helmets, and the trees.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

We're all dumb, I guess.

[–] But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (4 children)

I really don’t want to hear Americans bitch about any other nation right now, shut the fuck up, stop being cowards and fix this shit. Not a single one of you in that country is a person i want to hear from

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

But you see, not all of them voted for Trump, so it's unfair of you to demand anything of them and ostracize them all as one.

Unlike when USians spout their opinion of other countries, being totally justified in anything they say.

[–] But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Forget the right for a second altogether. The American left went insane, nobody was left enough for anyone. Many of the ones who didn’t vote trump also silent vote Harris. The same people that demanded the old white man step down, saw him replaced by an educated black women and the American left still went “eeew not that”

Speaking of which as an indigenous person I have never seen so much racism from the left as I did this past election. If you disagree with anything at all, forget civility, the teeth came out, fuck allies, fuck friends.

And I don’t want to hear about how bad Harris and Biden are, it’s 2026, we’ve had a year of trump and you guys are still blaming everyone else.

An apple may have some good spots left but when it’s rotting im just gonna toss it away like your country

[–] AntiBullyRanger@ani.social 1 points 1 month ago

Lying in this community gets you nowhere. We were massacred, twice. Get your head out of fascist propaganda, arm up, and guillotine everyone of these capitalists.

[–] optissima@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

You've fallen for the propoganda I see. Literally no one on the left I know didn't vote, it was all the fauxleft and people who haven't voted ever that didn't vote for Harris. You've drank the democrats koolaid.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

More than one thing can be bad at the same time.

[–] AntiBullyRanger@ani.social 2 points 1 month ago

🤝 They really hate liberation and freedom.

Fix your own mess Americans.

[–] But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah we know, you guys have always been terrorist assholes who don’t care about anyone, that’s my point

[–] BananaIsABerry@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Let's just not look too closely at the history of wherever you're from.

[–] But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, if you look you’ll see a bunch of genocide, slavery and murder being done to my people by yours when you infected our continent.

The new racist talking pint is “well natives had war too!” As if tribal skirmishes are in any way related to the atrocities of modern America

[–] BananaIsABerry@lemmy.zip -1 points 1 month ago

Bro I have no idea what the hell you're on about.

[–] Gsus4@mander.xyz 5 points 1 month ago

[–] redknight942@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oil is sub $60 a barrel. Its the minerals, Marie.

[–] Gsus4@mander.xyz 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Venezuela's heavy oil can only be processed in the US (and it isn't accessible right now). So there is no shift in production. But I it should stay in the ground.

[–] MeThisGuy@feddit.nl 0 points 1 month ago

for future oil tycoons to enrich themselves

[–] limelight79@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I love his work. He's had some really great cartoons over the years, and I mean since the late 90s when I first started seeing them.
