On January 1, 1959, the Revolution in Cuba, led by its historic leader, Fidel Castro, succeeded in overthrowing the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista, who had seized power after a coup d’état in 1952.

From that date, the Caribbean nation began a process of deep political and social transformations that allowed the island to put an end to illiteracy and achieve progress in indicators related to the health and well-being of the population.

However, measures such as land reform and the nationalization of companies, as well as the socialist option chosen by Cuba, were not well received by the United States, which began implementing an economic, commercial, and financial embargo in the 1960s that remains in effect today.

This and other actions by Washington over time against Cuba have caused serious economic difficulties for the country and hardship for its population, despite the rejection of the international community.

In a message posted on Twitter, the island’s president, Miguel Diaz-Canel, urged Cubans to continue working together and united throughout 2026.

“Let us celebrate the lives saved and the impossible overcome in 2025. Let us welcome 2026 knowing that by working together and united, we will grow,” he wrote.
