Conservatives lack object permanence, what else is new? It's kinda like all the conservatives who say that transgender people only started to exist a few years ago because that's when Fox News made them aware of them, and they can't fathom the idea that they existed before that and they just didn't know about it.

[–] fishy@lemmy.today 200 points 1 day ago (23 children)

It always comes down to a lack of empathy with conservatism. Just completely unable to take a step back and look from a different perspective until it's a personal issue.

Then they'll have to let it go because abortions and guns are more important than a functioning society.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 75 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I’ve learned that some people think empathy means putting yourself in other people’s shoes and asking how you’d react to their situation.

If I were in your situation, I would just do XYZ.

Real empathy is knowing there are differences between yourself and others and trying to understand that.

[–] QueenHawlSera@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago

What pisses me off is when people think of themselves in my position and fail to understand it.

Happens all the time

"If I was trans, I'd see a therapist instead of taking hormones!"

When therapists were the ones who got me on hormones to begin with, because gender affirming care is the only treatment for gender dysphoria that exists.

"If I was poor, I'd just work harder."

What do you mean you'd work harder? I have five hour shifts every day, I get paid the same amount whether I'm super anal about cleaning or if I just hit the hot spots and watch fucking Tubi on my phone in the bathroom for the remaining three hours. Not that I do the latter of course, my own sense of pride in my work will not allow that.

It's because evil people lack empathy. They villivy it, condemn it, call it woke or dei and will do everything to make it illegal.

Until they live it, then it should be something they are allowed to do.

[–] dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I think it looks evil, but is, in fact, stupidity; the whole group is just not at all self aware.

This is mental illness. Stuck in a congnitive-emotional state of being incapable to extrapolate from given information, incapable of empathy, even on a non-emotional level. Decades of ultra capitalism have finally given birth to a stunted and 100% egocentric generation.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 27 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What do you mean finally? Boomers have been like that since forever

[–] AngryRobot@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Their generation's original name was The Me Generation because they were so selfish.

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Imagine growing up in a literal baby boom. Schools were made to have 8-12 kids in a classroom, and suddenly because of the soldiers returning from the war it becomes 12-16 minimum in a class ... in some city areas it went from 10 kids per classroom to 30-35 kids. This was the boomers WHOLE life. They were crowded and overpopulated ... ALWAYS a challenge to be overcome because there were so many of them. "Go outside, go away, go play" became their parent's mantra.

[–] Tempus_Fugit@lemmy.world 29 points 1 day ago

Man, I hate conservatives. I know them all too well and this is them to a t.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 38 points 1 day ago (1 children)

hell rare they don't just paint it when it happens to themselves as a rare exception. "Oh i need it but most of it is just scammers or leeches" and so on.

[–] meejle@lemmy.world 45 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I read a thread somewhere where abortion clinicians were sharing their experiences.

Someone said they frequently got told they were going to hell, by women who were in the middle of their abortion and holding their hand at the time.

I've been thinking about it ever since. The mental gymnastics on these people.

So in other words before she opened her eyes she was asleep, or in other words wokeness is the answer?

Two strategies that decrease the amount of empathy in the world:

  • Teaching directly that empathy is a weakness.
  • Blaming people for learning that empathy is a weakness.

Maybe I'm more optimistic than I should be, but I kind of think its less of a "this affected me and now its a problem" and more of a "this affected me, it sucked, and now I dont want it to happen to anyone else".

Like, of course she should have woken up sooner, but she could have suffered, been quiet about it, and just let it happen to other people as well. Maybe Im not as cynical as I thought I was.

[–] Restaldt@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The problem is they have to experience it first. Every time.

They are incapable of considering or imagining what others are experiencing without going through it too. They are incapable of it.

Because that is what empathy is.

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I see it more as... "it's not important, and is a complete waste of money, until it affects me personally"

[–] the_q@lemmy.zip 23 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Look, I know that my takes aren't always well received, but this sudden care for immigrants, trans folks, governmental functions etc is only being talked about for exactly the same reasons. The economy is shit and it's effecting the upper middle class+ so now the aforementioned issues are nothing more than talking points for those with more power to help build support for a regime change that will only truly benefit the upper middle class+. Folks want to "be at brunch" again while systemic issues remain. None of the people in power care about you. None. We only exist as a means to an end for the machine.

Note, I know many regular people do care and have cared about these issues so don't misunderstand me.

I agree that most will forget their worry about the poor once they feel that their own situation is stable. However, what MAGA wants is what has happened to countless corrupt countries throughout history - a population that is 5% unbelievably wealthy, and the other 95% is dirt poor. Most Americans grew up middle class, and can't imagine that their government would ever deliberately take it away, but that's exactly what they are doing.

The middle class that boomers grew up with is already gone. Young people today don't know of a time when Dad worked a single job, mom stayed home with the kids, and they bought a house, a new car every 2 or 3 years, went on vacation, put kids through college, paid for weddings, etc., and still retired with a "3-legged stool:" SS, pension, and savings.

Today, it takes multiple incomes just to hang on to an apartment. People die still owing student loans. Medical bills bankrupt millions of people every year. Living in a car has now been so normalized by young people that I just read about a college who is building a dedicated multilevel parking structure for students who live in their cars. They could build a residence for them to have an actual roof over their heads, but they chose to reinforce the concept of living in a car as a valid future housing option for young people. I can't wait for some bright happy student taking families around on their campus tour, and pointing out their new innovative living facility.

Bottom line: the Sociopathic Oligarchs are configuring society so that everybody will die either super-wealthy, or much more likely, penniless. They don't want people inheriting some tiny fortune that might allow them to pay off their student loans, or their other bills, or pay off a mortgage, or buy a house, or start a business, or even just retire early. All of those things combine to enslave us, and they want much more of that, not less.

I used to watch the view. Meghan was the biggest bully and made it a toxic environment. It was not surprising when she announced her departure. It was a relief.

Also she kept calling herself a token minority because she was a Republican. But they are all pro corporate ghouls, Sara is pretty damn conservative. For some reason Ana and Meghan hated each other, even though Ana is a hardcore right winged Republican screaming about how the leftists stole her daddy's plantation back in Nicaragua. It was a whole thing. I hate Ana's politics but she doesn't give the domestic violence/emotional abuse vibes that Meghan gave.

More like: “My solution only applies to people like me.”

Think she wants a McD’s back of house cook to get what she gets? Of course not.

This is why the incel to transgirl pipeline is real.

"yeah but i'm doing just fine" is one conservative mantra

this "opened my eyes" is the other one.

McCain also pretended to be at least as far to the left as Biden and Hillary until they handed the last nomination to Kamala.

The immediate switch to talking shit about Biden and Kamala and taking back her endorsement against trump made it pretty obvious at the time.

But at least some other people are finally noticing.

[–] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (7 children)

Unfortunately I don't think this is a "conservative or republican" problem. Almost all Americans are too "me first individualists" until something affects them personally. In Canada it is Conservatives and Albertans who are more likely to be individualistic.
