Asswipe. Frankly, I prefer people who wipe their asses. I myself wipe my ass regularly and thoroughly. I am not ashamed of the fact.
They are referring to the thing that is used to wipe the ass, like a wet wipe or toilet paper.

Gets the point across, but nobody ever gets mad at the insinuation that you fell short of a high bar.
I first noticed the revival of 'mouth breather' in meme form about 12 years ago. I recall it from when I was a kid about 50 years ago as similar to calling someone r*tarded. I suspect it's been around as an insult for far longer, coming and going.
No, it doesn't make any sense on the surface, but it's not really about breathing through the mouth, if you look at the memes it's about calling people ugly and stupid, frankly.
