“Half of the shipment was unloaded at the port of Santiago de Cuba, to double the quotas that the WFP distributes in eastern provinces for five months,” the organization’s representation on the island stated.

The remainder of the shipment will arrive in Havana, with the aim of doubling deliveries to the priority population in the other provinces, in a bimonthly distribution system that will extend for a year.

“This international collaboration strengthens food security and guarantees national coverage for the most vulnerable sectors,” the WFP noted.

The agency also specified that the assistance will allow for expanded emergency response and support for the recovery of communities affected by recent weather events, such as Hurricane Melissa.
