Treatment of first nations in Northern America was fucked up on so many levels...
In the States, it's not uncommon to think of Canada as being more progressive, friendly and inclusive, so it was a bit shocking when I learned how racist and borderline genocidal they could be at various times, in various places.
Much more recently than you might think also. The last residential school to close operated from 1985 to 1997.

me too - learning about the history of torture, murder and otherwise mistreatment of first nations in Canada in the past 20 years was quite the shock.
