I was wondering who was still on reddit

[–] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

Fuck Reddit and Fuck Spez.

Lemmy will never truly be mainstream until we can have active communities this granular

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 5 points 6 hours ago

As easy as it is to block & defederate, I doubt most lemmy users would see this stuff even it it existed here.

[–] bearboiblake@pawb.social 195 points 17 hours ago (4 children)

Actually, it's stupider, the original meth subreddit made rules against posting images of drug use because reddit admins were breathing down their necks, some of the userbase deemed that censorship to be communist because something something 1984. Except, obviously, it was done because advertisers don't want to advertise next to drug use. So it's literally classic Americans calling the negative consequences of capitalism communism

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 89 points 17 hours ago

Everything conservatives don't like is "communism".

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 55 points 17 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Reflect@quokk.au 46 points 16 hours ago

And way less. It’s still a meth community. If I head to a mushroom community, I’ll see mushroom identification and cooking. If I stroll down to the clothing store, I’ll find clothes and accessories.

That Reddit is demanding the ability to advertise to meth addicts but only when they make their space more visually palatable, effectively gentrifying a corrosive community, is just peak capitalism.

[–] Anivia@feddit.org 8 points 12 hours ago

Except, obviously, it was done because advertisers don't want to advertise next to drug use.

Isn't that what the "quarantined subreddit" feature was added for? Advertisers that don't want their ad next to a picture of meth use most likely don't want their ads in a methamphetamine subreddit in general

How do you know this drama? Like my head is also full of useless internet drama, but this specific drama I feel like requires some origination explanation.

[–] Anivia@feddit.org 5 points 12 hours ago

Well, if you browse any of the drug related subreddits on reddit you can't really miss it. Heck, I browse almost only /r/steroids and I knew about it

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

meth and cocaine, heroin, the hard drugs has been the right wingers choice of drugs .

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Don't forget alcohol and nicotine

[–] hydroxycotton@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 12 hours ago

lol. let's hope lemmy never becomes truly mainstream then.

[–] kadu@scribe.disroot.org 42 points 18 hours ago (5 children)

Jokes aside, you'll find several instances of "normal community" having a "right wing normal community" spin off, it happened in online chat channels, then in forums, now Reddit.

The right's ideology is fundamentally unfit for harmonic co-existing with everybody else, so it's no surprise they always need to isolate themselves in a bunker.

[–] MTZ@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

Also they did it to punk, emo, goth and metal subcultures through subcultural parasitism.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 0 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

I think if you're a little less self-congratulatory you'll realise it's often just the same process where everyone thinks the folks on lemmy.ml are a bunch of nutters and congregate to other places.

You might be right about what happened here, but it might also be a load of people who call everything to the right of Bernie Sanders Nazism and were sick of it. Forming spin-off communities is what the fediverse is all about, so why would we criticise those guys for doing it?

I do think the subdivision and compartmentalisation of discourse is a problem, but we sure ain't solving it here in the fediverse lol

[–] kadu@scribe.disroot.org 4 points 4 hours ago

They can do whatever they want. I never said they shouldn't create spin-off communities.

I'm well within my right to point, laugh, and recognize the right is so atrocious at harmoniously dealing with differences that they keep creating their bunkers. Simple as that. Go ahead and create whatever community you want, with whatever justification you see fit.

[–] nickhammes@lemmy.world 20 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

It turns out, when you kick people out of a community for being toxic, racist, or otherwise counterproductive to maintaining a community... they go form a right wing spinoff of that community. I feel like it says a lot that when you kick people out for traits that aren't "being right wing", they form communities around that shared identity.

Like how the Donald Duck subreddit got a spinoff called The_Donald

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 7 points 17 hours ago

Then one of them inevitably opens up a place like this, looking more or less like this....

[–] db2@lemmy.world 44 points 18 hours ago

No, not "too left wing", just not far right enough for them. The US left wing is the equivalent to right of center in actual developed countries, to put that in to perspective. In other words, the crazy people weren't crazy enough for the ultra crazies.

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 42 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

There really is a theme to meth use over the years, isn't there.

Gonna start calling it fascidust

[–] ozymandias@sh.itjust.works 22 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

well i mean, the actual nazis used it quite a bit…

[–] WoodScientist@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

I mean, how else are you going to try and march across the damn Soviet Union? That place was fucking ginormous.

[–] nostrauxendar@lemmy.world 6 points 18 hours ago (10 children)

I think that's what they were getting at

Yeah and it's not even a stims thing. I've seen progressives down Adderall between shots and do coke. But the one meth user I've known was a queer republican who tried to lie her way into relationships with people.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 14 points 16 hours ago

All the merh boards are just too political now.
