The PT leader in the Chamber of Deputies, Lindbergh Farias, announced this possibility on social media, accusing the controversial initiative of having procedural flaws and content that violates the Constitution.

“Reducing sentences for crimes against the democratic rule of law is unconstitutional: it creates inadequate protection for democracy, violates a long-standing clause, constitutes a prohibited regression, encourages new coups d’état, and breaks the general and abstract nature of criminal law,” Farias wrote.

BDespite delays, the Constitution and Justice Committee and then the full Senate approved the Sentencing Bill yesterday.

The Senate committee certified, by a vote of 17 to 7, the initiative that reduces penalties and accelerates the progression of sentences for those convicted of crimes against the democratic rule of law.

Later, the full Senate also ratified the bill by a vote of 48 to 25.
