Maybe I don't want "the best content".

[–] Fuck_u_spez_@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

And if I did, why would I have come to YouTube?

Translated to English: To continue, turn off your VPN/Proxy. This will allow us to track you better and serve you personalized ads that make us more money while destroying your privacy.

Otherwise there would be an option called 'Nah, thanks, I'm fine with suboptimal content'.

Youtube can locate deez nuts

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 3 months ago

After getting this shit for a while I just installed a Firefox extension called LibRedirect that whenever I click on a YouTube link it just sends me to an alternative (I have it configured to use invidious) instead.

Problem solved.

"""Best content""""

Grayjay... is the one that holds a solution for your problems...

[–] Hoticeberg@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

This stopped working for me a few months ago.

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Consider hitting the "update" buttons in the sources and main settings tab.

[–] Hoticeberg@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Very Funny. I have revisited it several times, fully updated, and it still doesn't play YouTube videos.

[–] Kraven_the_Hunter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Weird. It continues to work for me, as recently as this morning. Maybe delete and re install?

[–] Hoticeberg@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Ok I reinstalled and I'm still not able to play video. The feed loads, but the video never loads. The update did change things, as before the whole page of the app froze but now I can click on me u items.

What the heck is your hardware or software environment? Even on GrapheneOS I have all of the dependencies needed for the app to function.

Are you running some ancient, discontinued release of Android?

[–] Hoticeberg@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (2 children)

This is installed on a pixel 8. Here's a acreen grab of the video endlessly loading.

I'm using a 1st gen Pixel Fold, so same family as yours. This is really strange.

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

That is odd. I'm using a Pixel 9, but I can't think of any substantial differences that would change how GrayJay would function. If you can grab a copy of your logs and send them to the dev team, I'm sure they could narrow down the issue better.

One thing you do have to keep in mind is that the Youtube source updates quite often (since ofc Google isn't a fan of it), so if something's really off, try updating that first.

I'm currently watching a YT video on my own install rn, so current implementation is functional.

[–] Hoticeberg@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Yep, nearly daily updates with the YouTube plugin and often the main grayjay as well. I'm in the US if that makes a difference, but ever since YouTube updated their platform a few months ago grayjay simply doesn't play video. I should submit a big report, I was just under the impression that the app was losing the arms race.

Fortunately, the project is steady and ongoing (in fact, their desktop client released recently and I've been enjoying that with local sync), but of course there'll be things that slip through the cracks.

I'm also in the US, so I doubt it's a regional issue.

I have to turn off my VPN just to use Lemmy 😭

[–] incompetent@programming.dev 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Why? I've never had that happen here.

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

I wish I knew why.

Had a similar issue with a singular video using Freetube. Had to download the video itself through ytdl-p in order to view it. Wasn't a total waste but wasn't a video I'd recommended either. There was zero chance I was gonna just skin and scalp my internet privacy and safety for that singular video.

You should feel flattered. They're saying that your private data is the best content.
