(And I use "Free" loosely because I do pay for Prime Video, so it went from paid to much more expensive)

I would never pay for prime video, they are shit. I pay for amazon prime because Its cheper than paid delivery and they give me prime video for free because that's the only way anyone would watch it.

Kelsey Grammer was mayor of Chicago in Boss.

Ted Danson is mayor of LA here.

Comming soon ?

Woody Harrelson gets a series being mayor of Vegas?

John Ratzenberger as mayor of NYC?

Psst, hey. https://fmhy.pages.dev/ Stop giving money to these assholes.

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 30 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Ten years ago my position on piracy was broadly, "do it if you want, but don't act like you're justified or ethical".

Now I'm convinced piracy is more ethical than feeding these monsters.

I also don't consider it a change in my own values. It's a change in how fucking awful and in need of dismantling the Corporation has got.

[–] TheSambassador@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

Absolutely agree. When I got out of college, I was like "I have some money finally, I'll support the shows and movies I want to watch by actually buying them online outright and streaming everything else legally!"

And then several of the things I "bought" got removed from my library several years later.

Then instead of 2 or 3 streaming platforms, there were suddenly 6.

Then every streaming service kept shuffling around my favorite shows.

And suddenly, the experience of paying for the content I wanted to watch became way too cumbersome.

Buy a nas, start storing your own media. All subscription services will remove content, raise prices and introduce more ads. Its not a question of if but when.

Also, you are like a child sucking the capitalism tit when you use these services. Take your pride back.

Change to Linux when you are in the spirit. Grow up and join the adults.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

How do you even "rip" media from streaming services? Like how to bypass the drm thing and convert the data to a file?

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 3 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Most people dont do that themselves. They just download. Some people, specially in Russia, just stream movies from sites that exist. I dont do that but its popular.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

You let somebody else do it.

They're are ways that involve extracting keys from vulnerable devices if I understand correctly, but if they become well known then they get blocked.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Sometimes, you find things so niche, you can't find a torrent for it even after looking through torrent aggregators.

[–] mustlane@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 hours ago

you can't find a torrent for it

If you are talking about books, then annas-archive should suffice. If other media, then private trackers is your only hope. The good ones usually have.. pretty much everything

[–] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 20 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Wait, you pay for Amazon prime and you have to pay for the show?? Why on earth...

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 3 points 4 hours ago

Yeah, there's stuff under the subscription and stuff you pay for (although you can pay for anything if you're not a subscriber iirc)

It gives them a perverse incentive to remove shows from the subscription tier if lots of people are watching it. You also get shows where the first few seasons are in the sub, and then suddenly switches to pay for.

They're an easy cancel.

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 7 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

They also show ads unless you pay more than the prime membership.

I haven't opened prime since that day.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 2 points 4 hours ago

I cancelled it the day they announced that

[–] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 2 points 6 hours ago

Man, that's not ok

[–] mech@feddit.org 10 points 8 hours ago

The wind is calling you out to sea, matey.

[–] damnthefilibuster@lemmy.world 6 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Why were you watching it? It's a shit... show!

No but seriously... sail, people!

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

flix-cli is more convenient than if you owned netflix

[–] Oaksey@lemmy.world 6 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Much like I paid for a year subscription, then they decided I had to watch ads on that plan unless I upgraded to the new plan.

I am altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further.

[–] Bwaz@lemmy.world 13 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Canceled Prime earlier this year. Haven't missed it, can certainly do without ut.

I had a popup for ad free Amazon, a few dollars a month, so that was relevant to my interests and I signed up, then watched a movie.

There was another popup "ad-free experience is not available for this program"

I immediately cancelled, the popup should say "here's an ad, fuck you"

[–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 10 points 13 hours ago

After HBO was taken over by David “Piece of Shit” Zaslav multiple shows and movies disappeared while I was in the middle of watching them. I haven’t resubscribed since

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 8 points 12 hours ago

Yup. It's all shitty these days. Just ☠️🏴‍☠️

Now is a great time to look into VPNs, 1337x, and qBittorrent. And of course Jellyfin.

Your suffering is not a KPI so it doesn't matter.

[–] duncan_bayne@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago

Your suffering is not a KPI

Some days I doubt that.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 10 points 14 hours ago

we were in the middle of one of our favorite scifis when that happened. now we own the box set. then we realized it was the only reason we had that subscription. oops to them i guess.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 32 points 17 hours ago

weird... never seen that in the high seas!

join us you sea dog!

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 45 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

This is shitty, but as a programmer I'm kinda impressed.

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 32 points 18 hours ago

I mean those video players lazy load so it probably just requested the next chunk and got the "you gotta pay response" same as if you returned to a specific spot with a link after a long time.

[–] Opisek@piefed.blahaj.zone 68 points 21 hours ago (3 children)

The Amazon Prime model is the scummiest. At least Netflix doesn't bait you into a subscription just to then tell you actually the show you wanted to see costs even more.

[–] nogooduser@lemmy.world 36 points 20 hours ago (9 children)

To play devil’s advocate:

The Netflix equivalent of this is that the show just disappears (the Marvel shows) or you get the first seasons and not the last or even the last and not the first (at one time Prime had part of Lucifer and Netflix had the rest).

The only reason that it went from free to paid (instead of just disappearing) is that they lost the licence for streaming it under Prime Video but they didn’t lose the licence for selling it.

[–] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 32 points 20 hours ago

I doesn't really make a difference whether it was the actual platform or a higher decision; the end result is pissed off fans that turn to piracy instead of giving you money. Then those fans give you even less in the future. There will always be some that just say 'fuck it' and pay up, but it's diminishing returns.

This bullshit is exactly how pirates are born.

The annoying thing I've noticed is that they have been making the last season of shows cost money. I was like what just happened, I thought there was a whole nother episode

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 17 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Only had youtube cutting of a clip halfway because it was suddenly set to private. The amount of clips I put in Watch Later to have them disappear is also too high. Stop recommending slop that disappears later, stupid alghorithm.

While you where watching it as in between episodes or actually in the middle of an episode?

[–] northernlights@lemmy.today 8 points 11 hours ago

I paused a little before the end of S2E09, came back a few hours later to it, and all of S2 was not free anymore.
