Chickens do make funny enjoyable noises.

If you can smell a few backyard chickens the owners are doing something horribly wrong.

[–] SharkWeek@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Ah ok, yeah if you have a handful then I'm sure the smell is dissipated. I've only ever encountered chickens in quantities of 30 or more.

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I had 160+ at one point and it didn't smell even if you were standing in the middle of the yard. They need space, that's all.

[–] SharkWeek@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Maybe I'm just sensitive to the smell and you're not, then?

We're talking about 30-50 of them with about half an acre to roam. The smell turned my stomach every day in a way that no other farm smell ever has.

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago

I'm not sure why you're getting downvoted, your experience is valid.

50 on 1/2 acre is a lot, but shouldn't be stomach wrenchingly stinky. Grass certainly helps. Bare dirt would require more upkeep. My 160 were on like 2, and having that many was unintentional but like I said wasn't particularly smelly at all.

Sounds like chickens aren't for you, though. There's a nearby dairy I pass from time to time that smells really bad some days.

What are chickens? We just don't know.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago

They are eggs that hatched.

[–] duncan_bayne@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Can confirm! Chickens, dogs, and children - all noisy as hell in their own way, and all make our garden sound great :)

Neighbours had a rooster for a while, until someone complained to the Council and the "rooster police" made them get rid of it.

But I loved it! Waking up early in the AM for meetings with folks in the US, and hearing a rooster, just started long days the right way.

[–] dustyData@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

If anyone is thinking about having a rooster, though, make sure to also have chickens for it to court and mate with. Because roosters without chickens get crazy and start singing at all sort of inappropriate hours. Not fun waking up at 3 Am to a rooster having a psychotic breakdown because it doesn't have any social interaction. Or random screams at midnight that don't let you fall sleep because the poor thing is lonely. Be aware.

Depends how feral they are, especially with children

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It's the same for me with pigeon sounds. 🙂
And that although I hate pigeons...

[–] snugglesthefalse@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Like wood pigeon sounds? Those remind me of home in the spring

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 days ago

We have mainly Eurasian collared doves where I live.
They are also actually kinda pretty...

[–] shadowedcross@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I'm curious, why do you hate pigeons?

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Don't get me wrong, pigeons in the countryside are cool!

So "hate" might be too strong an expression.

But when pigeons share a densely populated city centre with a lot of human inhabitants, the different needs will clash.

So besides the enchanting cooing, I can't use the easternmost quarter of my balcony any more, as it gets constantly covered in shit from the pigeon meeting place on the roof above.

The paint of my car has non-removable stains caused by the aggressive pigeon urine, substantially diminishing its value.

Also we are not allowed to properly ventilate the common stairways even during hot summer, because the pigeons would enter the building through the open windows.

So, yes, I am really not very fond of pigeons.
Except their cooing. ;-)

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm so fucking mad at them shitting on my car. I have like 3 MASSIVE like 3 inch shitstains on it...

The paint was brand new :-(

I hope I can polish it off some day...it looks terrible on black paint...

If you don't want the same happening, you can avoid it. You have to go out every day and check for poop on the car. If there is any, some car shampoo mixed with water at a higher concentration than advertised om the bottle (I use 2x) on a paper towel will do the trick IF you make sure the paint is DAMP and the paper is DAMN and you DO NOT RUB only glide over the poop, without applying ANY pressure. It won't leave any marring or Micro-Scratches of any kind. I did that for a very long time.

[–] egrets@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

make sure the paint is DAMP and the paper is DAMN

I only have DARN paper, will that work?

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago

Gosh gee golly gee willikers no. Only DAMN paper and up will do the trick (HELL, FUCK, SHIT, etc.).

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

Lol

It's just that so many screamed at me that this will damage my paint that I got tired of it... They just like rubbing

Treat your paint like a clitoris

[–] shadowedcross@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Makes sense, I myself live in the countryside, so I haven't really had to put up with the pigeon density found in cities.

[–] sorghum@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I work in a warehouse where they roost inside. So much bird crap everywhere.

[–] shadowedcross@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

That's fair. I think I too would hate something if it shat everywhere in my workplace.

[–] TheBat@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

They're not birds. They're flying rats.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago

Our neighbor has said similar, and we don't even have many

[–] sundray@lemmus.org 5 points 2 days ago

It's a good cluckin' day.
