If I had to make up something, since by canon it shoots high explosive rockets, the exhaust has to go somewhere, and this solution might even reduce recoil.
In reality, I think the designers just saw the picture of an AK with the gas cylinder and didn't know what it was for.

No, see, what you need is an open bolt firearm with a diagonal mirror that flips up so the sight looks straight down the bore. That way the shooter can see exactly what the rifle is aimed at. Like a DSLR.
