The number of comments in this thread blaming an individual for a structural problem is shocking

Me when people who knowingly feed the Leviathan are eaten by it:

This why I use Linux and self-host everything. The only Apple device I use is a phone and only because I consider them slightly less risky and unethical than anything Google. As soon as a good linux phone is available that doesn’t rely on anything from Google, I’m done with Apple, too. The lack of any meaningful or productive protections against the abuses of these enormous companies is horrifying.
I mean, there are great custom Roms, like GrapheOS, LineageOS etc. They give you actual privacy and freedom from Google.
The moment Graphene is available for non-Google devices, I am onboard.
Careful: when you self-host everything then you equally have it all in one basket. Be very careful with that server of yours.
I do the same, to get away from the corporate risk, but I am acutely aware of the individual risk.
I try to keep redundant multisite backups. Not just of data but of entire server configurations. It's a lot for one guy to handle in his spare time.
Everything is backed up to multiple homelabs of family and friends. Privately federated backups are the way to go.
I mean, the writing was on the wall, goodle destroyed so many peoples livelihood by closing their gmail accounts, same with so many others. Putting all your eggs in one basket has always been a bad idea.
That is why we talk about 3-2-1 backups, etc.
I've lost at least 2 gmail accounts simply because my phone died and there was no other way to recover them. I knew the passwords, knew all the details, but because I no longer had access to the phone the account was tied to poof gone.
this is why I no longer use gmail. If your phone breaks or whatever you're essentially screwed.
That's also your fault though, especially for allowing it to happen twice. I have physical copies stored of the recovery codes with all my other essential documents for precisely this reason.
Never.... NEVER work and personal with the same account. It's a pain to have separate accounts, but this makes it so much more worth it. If they got mad at the personal account, that's losing photos and other connection pieces but the work account (DEV account) still can make money. If it's the DEV account, your personal still works and you don't lose all of the personal connections but hopefully you're working under an LLC or other entity that has the ability to have some legal push back when needed. Not always, but sometimes, businesses don't want to mess with other businesses but they'll punch "Steve" in the mouth.
Also making a professional account for all your work stuff might be necessary because business entities have more rights than human beings do now ._. and if one business is banned, a novel and unconnected business can be created, that is no longer subject to the prior business' ban because it is a legally distinct entity...
I thought this was just a meme until I clicked on the link. It's an actual article.
My first move would be emailing Tim himself. It will almost certainly get some attention from his executive team. Be kind and make a clear ask for what you’re wanting.
If that doesn’t work, I’d go to the media.
They show chat screenshots but don’t mention whether they even called them.
I’ve dealt with Apple support before—mostly, they’re good—but the one time I had a real problem I spoke to people on the phone and got it escalated. It’s much easier to express frustration and anger and make demands when you’re talking to someone. Chat and email are easy for people to ignore and they’re less likely to empathize with you.
I always call and talk to someone—calmly, at first—when it’s important.
If your entire world is dependent on a random privately owned digital service…might need to start thinking about what you’d do if it went down 🤔
Reminds me of streamers who get banned and act like access to twitch or YouTube was a human right
There truly is no such thing as safety when it comes to corpofascism. If the party decides to unperson you, you are no longer a person and therefore no longer entitled to being treated like a person.
Crazy as it sounds, this is why I for one would have preferred there to be some sort of legal or government body (as in, hand of the population exerting its sovereign monopoly on violence) whose job it is to punish corporations when they hurt people. But that's never going to be allowed to happen. Hell, if it did, if a NATION STATE declared actual war on a corporation, what would that even look like. Would they shell corporate administrative buildings with artillery and attempt to capture/detain corporate assets and personnel?
Shit is already way off the deep end.
Wish there were an actual legally applicable digital user bill of rights or something, but as far as i know any such concept isn't worth the paper it'd be printed on.
Good reminder I should install immich today and maybe nextcloud.
I do back up my photos library with Time Machine and borg, and sync.com (Canadian hosted!), but it would be better to migrate away now.
The other thing is I have a numbers file with all my investment info and finance history that if this were to happen would become unavailable… I should migrate that too…
I have almost completely degoogled (some old stuff still uses my gmail) but I haven’t fully de-appled yet.
Never a better time to migrate stuff to Linux.
How can they lock you out of your finance files?
Even if they shut down your iCloud, wouldn't you still have a local copy on your computer (and perhaps another one your phone)?
If you have the file on all your devices, and all of them are apple devices, and they lock down your apple account, then you lose access to all of your devices, and to all the data on them.
Do not put all your eggs in one basket.
Collateral: if you self-host everything, then that is also only one basket.
Always be careful and have more than one avenue.
You should. This is just more whining from someone who couldn’t be bothered to create a local backup.
You think this is bad.
One day, we'll have the horsepower to have our own personal AI that gets trained as you use it, and it learns about you.
Then it'll get destroy'd because you didn't back it up.
5+ years of training/etc.
You think its bad when you have to reinstall windows and you lose all random stuff you accumulated over years? or if you lose a phone that had a bunch of pictures/bookmarks/etc on it?
Losing your AI will be like losing a pet/friend...
