Per capita, California is not losing the most people. Red states are.

[–] CaptFeather@lemm.ee 8 points 2 years ago

Critics conveniently forget we're the most populated state so by default we have the highest number of people moving out of state

[–] aidan@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

A little bit deceptive way to say it because there are some red states with high out-migration like Alaska and North Dakota- but there are also a lot of red states with much higher in-migration than California and, especially, New York, such as Florida and Texas.(From what I saw for 2016-2017 this could be more up to date but I don't know the accuracy Plus this looks like generally blue counties are more often out migrating.](https://www.census.gov/content/dam/Census/library/stories/2022/03/net-domestic-migration-increased-in-unites-states-counties-2021-figure-2.jpg)

[–] neptune@dmv.social 3 points 2 years ago (2 children)

That's not per capita and it seems to ignore deaths, which is also very self serving for the red states.

[–] nilloc@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Florida and Arizona have traditionally been the popular places for old folks to go before dying, that statistic might add clarity.

[–] neptune@dmv.social -1 points 2 years ago

WV had the biggest percent loss in 2021. And if you look census to census, it's very red state for percent losses.

[–] aidan@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

You can just look at the percent change...

Until they realize how shitty those states are and want to but, can't move back.

[–] isthingoneventhis@lemmy.world 12 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I think Arizona isn't the worst in terms of weather, but a lot of people are getting fucked by the cost of living in Cali. Arizona makes sense for the sound of mind.

[–] assembly@lemmy.world 18 points 2 years ago

I mean if your options are only TX, FL, and AZ, I think AZ is probably the better bet for destinations at this point. Southern AZ is short on water but I think northern AZ is in better shape. Wouldn’t want to live under DeSantis and TX is pretty nutty in general.

[–] bradorsomething@ttrpg.network 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I've always felt Arizona is a fine place to live if you don't like water.

[–] isthingoneventhis@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Myeah. It's basically a dried out version of Cali with more flat bits, as far as I've experienced.

[–] CaptFeather@lemm.ee 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

dried out version of Cali

Oof that's saying something considering how often we're in a drought here lol

[–] isthingoneventhis@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Well Arizona is like proper desert, Cali is just desert lite.

[–] TigrisMorte@kbin.social 7 points 2 years ago

Um, did you see the string of 110 F at midnight in a row? You sure you want to pay to try and cool that enough to survive?

[–] Empricorn@feddit.nl -1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Uh... Why wouldn't they be able to move back?

[–] mojo@lemm.ee 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It's very expensive to move, especially so to more expensive states

[–] Empricorn@feddit.nl 0 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yeah, moving is expensive, but that's not exactly "can't move back"...

[–] mojo@lemm.ee 0 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

What world do you live in where money is not a deciding factor?

[–] Empricorn@feddit.nl 0 points 2 years ago

Uh, what? Where did I say money isn't a deciding factor? I agreed that moving is expensive!

The original comment didn't say it was difficult, they said you literally "can't move back", which is obviously not true. Hence my question...

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

We change the locks on the California border the day after they move.

[–] kandoh@reddthat.com 37 points 2 years ago

Companies move to these states to take advantage of lax taxes, they still need skilled labor though so they pay someone from California to relocate.

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 18 points 2 years ago (1 children)

They aren't sending their best

[–] not_woody_shaw@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

In reading the average IQ of both places.

Edit: that should be "increasing"

[–] magnetosphere@kbin.social 17 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I want to say “fine, California is better off without them”, but I’m sure there are some people who are forced to move for economic reasons. But then again, why are they choosing those shitholes?

[–] iforgotmyinstance@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago

It's almost 1:1 people moving out and in. It's primarily chasing jobs, which is just part of life.

[–] GlendatheGayWitch@lib.lgbt 11 points 2 years ago

Many of those that move out are conservative and want to be with their kind.

In 2018, native Texans voted for Beto 51-40 and people who moved here voted for Cruz 57-42.

They're going to florida instead though

[–] superguy@lemm.ee -1 points 2 years ago

Better than texas.

Florida shits on texas. They have nice beaches, cities, disney world, etc.

Only people who don't agree are texans who have lived there their entire lives.
