And then in another Newsweek article, Miami is building skyscrapers to house the influx of millionaires leaving New York in droves. Is every Newsweek article just an opinion piece?

Newsweek is sensationalist. They only care about clicks.

He's still their boy though.

No?

How'd he get there?

i want to slap that writer so hard.

No its not its barely been a month and he's hasn't been in office yet. What you have it a normal movement of people who may also happen to agree with him, but also lowest interest rates sre making everything more affordable, even the big buck stuff.

Any economst will tell you almost any trailing indicators lag, usually by a lot, often 18 months or more.

Rent and moving lags by a year or more by the natural of most people having a year long lease (with around 10% of all leases up any given monthl for homes) the

Ok so you're probably correct but I also like seeing the opposite of the usual "omg socialism everyone in NYC is already dead!!!"

Mandani's win isn't an economic condition, it's a societal one

People are fleeing persecution and Mamdani raised a banner and promised safety. I promise you, there are people who started making plans after he won the primary. There are people who have already moved there because of Mamdani and protection he promises, despite the city being under Adams for a while longer

We'll only know the full scope, and the draw of economic conditions in hindsight... But there a wave of, essentially, refugees that are moving to New York because of the promise of safety

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 1 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Mmhm..how long does it take to decide to move, find a place, sell or finish the lease on your old one, pack, then finally move?

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 6 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Sales are up 31% since the election. They’re not exactly running away

[–] FishFace@piefed.social -3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

And to that I say... how long does it take to decide to move, find a place, sell or finish the lease on your old one, pack, then finally move?

If there is any effect on net migration to New York you won't see it yet.

Actually to that I say... house sales tell you nothing because you don't know whether it went from occupied to unoccupied or vice versa or stayed the same.

[–] Jarix@lemmy.world 9 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

At any given minute millions of people are making the decision of where to move.

Post election, that is so a significant amount of time for one to turn their gaze at NYC.

If rates are good, and rats left some vacancies, perfect storm

It doesn't have to be some crazy explanation
