I want a Computerphile video where Tom Scott explains how federation works.

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 23 points 2 months ago (2 children)

TFW it is just like his time zones video...

[–] mech@feddit.org 8 points 2 months ago

I imagine federation can be equally frustrating.

The time zones video is an all time(zone) classic

[–] mech@feddit.org 5 points 2 months ago

The part that always sends me is the astrophysicist going "Excuse me, we just had a leap second".
Like it's an accident that just happened and now the whole world needs to adjust their clocks.

I want a Computerphile video where Tom Scott explains how email works.

[–] Fmstrat@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago

I wonder if I could stitch that together out of random segments.

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 68 points 2 months ago (4 children)

This internet as it was meant to be.

I don't know if penis.gay exists, but it should. Think about it. If you're a gay dude, and you're out and proud, what better way to find other gay dudes who are also out and proud?

I don't know how social interaction works with finding other like minded gay guys, but do you know how thrilled straight men would be if women had a horny.drippingpussy instance that they used when they wanted sex?

I think part of the problem with guys trying to find sex, is chasing it from people who are in no way interested. So if Tom flirts with Sally, but Sally is asexual, then Tom has a 0% succsess potential if he hits on her at the bar. But he doesn't know that. So after he gets rejected, now he feels bad about himself. Nobody likes getting rejected.

But if Tom went on nsfwlemmy, and found Tina@horny.drippingpussy then he would know that she's just like a Buffalo NY city street in December. Ready to be plowed.

And for gay guys, penis.gay would let them identify to each other that they're all like minded, and judgement free.

Although as I think about this, at least in America, it may not be the best idea, because now ICE is essentially becoming the S.S. and using social media activity to track "undesirables". And I don't trust the republicans to be open minded and empathetic. We all know what the nazis did with gay people in the 30s/40s.

So I guess it would be one of those things that would be great in a perfect world...but because we live in this reality, we can't have nice things.

A good alternative would be ...

penis.mightier

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago

That one should be for writers. Poets and authors and literature enthusiasts. Feign ignorance if anyone comments on the name.

[–] zqwzzle@lemmy.ca 24 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It’s not an instance, and that is one hell of a landing page.

What if you just join cause you think penises are gay?

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Penises are pretty gay tbh

[–] PabloSexcrowbar@piefed.social 15 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I just checked, and penis.gay is currently taken. However, penis.world and penis.fit are both available, albeit expensive.

Would be funny to make a penis.straight for a bunch of straight guys show up, but then it's nothing but dudes, so it becomes . gay anyways lol

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

From what I've heard, hooking up is already pretty easy for gay guys. Basically “u want sum fuk?”

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

lemmy.smash and this is the instance mascot

lemmy.smash

disappointed that this is not a real TLD

[–] Monument@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 2 months ago

Legendary pull

[–] glitchdx@lemmy.world 33 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I tried getting in on yiffit.net, but they weren't taking new users at the time. Kinda sad about that.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 31 points 2 months ago

I almost chose Lemmygrad for my first account because it's an excellent pun and I didn't know that it was for ACTUAL tankies before reading closer.

I'm not sure my enthusiasm for the project would have survived making that mistake at the very beginning lol

[–] io@piefed.blahaj.zone 18 points 2 months ago (5 children)

dw you still got bark.lgbt/ , woof.group, chitter.xyz , kinkycats.org , thicc.horse , furry.energy , pawb.fun , tiggi.es , ...

there is so so many furry mastodon instances

[–] aow@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 months ago

Not a furry, but thicc.horse is a crazy good instance name.

I miss walmart.horse

(The site was just a picture of a Walmart with a horse in front of it)

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 17 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Could someone explain the joke? I don't get what Tom Scott is doing here.

[–] callyral@pawb.social 34 points 2 months ago (3 children)

I'm guessing it's because Tom Scott goes to plenty of places and some Fediverse users use plenty of instances

[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago (8 children)

I was on blahaj.zone until they decided they didn't like it when you call out admin abuse

[–] GrammarPolice@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

blahaj is a clown show of an instance

Why would you want multiple accounts on the same software? Having a Mastodon, a Misskey/Sharkey, a Lemmy, a Mbin, a Wafrn, etc., that makes sense - each one of those have different tech and very different communities. But why would you want more than one Lemmy?

[–] BCOVertigo@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago

I asked this question to someone I saw frequently instance hopping and they said it was related to instance federation and the spread of posted content, as well as their desire to advertise lesser known instances. I think it's a little disorienting and creates the opportunity for dopplegangers but it was a much more satisfying motivation than avoiding bans.

[–] WalrusDragonOnABike@reddthat.com 10 points 2 months ago

I've swapped for various reasons: instance shutting down, defederation by major instance I interest with, etc, downvotes vs no downvotes. I also like having at least two I can easily swap between in case one is down.

[–] InvalidName2@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 months ago

Literally every single Lemmy instance I've ever joined (and then some) has suffered significant long-term outages or degradation of service on a semi-regular basis. I don't use any other social media. So, when I'm looking for my "fix", I don't have time to bullshit around and wait for penis.gay to get to the bottom of their their issues. I want my engagement and I want it now. So off to lemmy.wtf I go if it's up.

But also, some of us have serious accounts geared towards specific topics/hobbies, accounts where we might share information that could be publicly identifiable, and farting around shit post accounts all separated out. Easier to keep the creeps away.
