This could be work or recreational related. Anything you've done that you sit back and go "hell yeah I did that". I'm typically wary of working on cars because I have big hands and no auto specialty tools. But, I was able to make a pretty involved (for me) repair last week and I've felt really great about it since. What about you?

We're in the middle of remodeling a house that was builtt in 1981. I'm pretty proud of the changes we've made so far. I just draw it out and the contractor does the work, but i think we've really improved the design, function, storage, and feel of the house. My biggest disappointment is that I should have hired a real plumber instead of a guy with a truck to replace the cast iron sewer lines.

[–] Chippys_mittens@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I hear ya on that last part. You learn to always pay a premium for quality plumbers and electricians.

[–] bizarroland@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I think it depends on the job. In house cast iron sewer line replacements are only a few steps in difficulty above swapping a sink, not counting the muscle you need to move them, assuming you're swapping to PVC.

[–] Today@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

He went over instead of under the French drain lines because he was digging with a shovel. Now it's not deep enough to allow proper drainage from a new bar sink. Awaiting next plumber's ideas.

What a dunderhead

I have a decent bit of pipe fitting under my belt. I really only call my plumber if it has to do with gas (like my stove). Pipes that move water, no problem. I try not to fuck with electric systems at all though.

Solved most 2025 Advent of Code problems using an alien programming language called Uiua.

This is what my day 2 solution looks like:

Advent of Code

One year I hope to remember that's a thing that exists when it isn't already several days into the month.

I'm about halfway through the biggest furniture commission I've had so far. It's only a small bookshelf, but it's solid 1" thick red oak with wenge accents. I've only messed up a couple of minor things along the way 😅

[–] Chippys_mittens@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Wow that'll be one hell of a book shelf, are you going to stain/varnish it ?

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yup! Dark red stain+poly. Hoping that using an oil based one will be able to somewhat sidestep the issue that my garage is like 40° right now.

[–] Chippys_mittens@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Nice! I love a good stain, the red is really going to bring out the beauty of the wood!

I finally am allowing myself to take some down time for my own sanity. It’s weird how slowly a work ethic can take over your mindset and the next thing you know, you’re putting in 24- 25 days in a row of work and are burnt out.. Rather than be frizzle-fried by Christmas, I decided to stop now and actually enjoy the holiday. This is a first, and it’s been a long time - too long - that I’ve allowed myself to relax.

[–] Chippys_mittens@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Good for you bud, get some rest. How do you like to wind down ?

I finished recording, mixing, and mastering a song I wrote.

It’s a big deal to me because my job takes most of my energy, so when I get home all I want to do is sit and decompress. Also I’ve been struggling with getting a good vocal chain and drum sound, and every time I sat down and didn’t get anywhere, I’d get discouraged and not touch it for weeks at a time.

At this stage I just have some minor mixing edits to make and I intend to release it. I’m hoping this gives me the motivation to record the dozens of other songs I have sitting inert in my head.

Was getting really unhealthy. Lost 22 kgs so far, been going to the gym the last three months.

Starting to see some muscle definition from lifting, stuff is easier to pick up and move around. Wish i did it earlier, but better late than never.

Ripping out 50sqm of paving to install grass for my kids. Had to readjust levels, rip out a badly placed brick planter box and the oversized footing for it, adjust retic feeds and install new lines and sprinklers. So far I've shifted around 6m3 of dirt, bricks and concrete, not including the pavers. Final step of clearing last few cubic metres of dirt, putting down loam and then laying grass is this weekend. Then I just need to get it to establish in Australian summer ..

I'm successfully jacking up someone's sagging floor as one of my first solo jobs. I don't want to make being my own boss a lifestyle, but it's cool to have the confidence that I can ditch my future bosses at any time and just fly solo for a bit til I get a new one.

I joined Zwift today! I already did utility cycling, but it's mostly using an e-bike so doesn't provide all that much exercise. I think the gamification will help me stay motivated enough to actually do rides for fitness.

Somehow I managed to get inspired and created/published a few medium content books (aka puzzle and other oddities in niche areas) online. Actually sold a couple somehow, but if they don't do well that's okay. Trying to work on a real novel now. Not really a writer at heart, but have fallen in love with an idea and the deeper I get the more I want it to succeed. Ironically I took a break from the writing part and played around with cover ideas and character envisioning. Was better at that since I'm a graphics person, and finishing that side trip inspired me to jump back into the writing.

Thanks to some fantastic help from @irmadlad@lemmy.world and the other awesome commenters on my help request, I got some of my self hosted services running externally, and was able to backup my phone photos while I was away :)

[–] irmadlad@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Aww shucks. Glad to help. Pay it forward.

I have set myself some goals this year. Broke them down into many smaller in between goals. And so far I achieved many of them. The most difficult ones are still pending, but yay for me.

I got some business finance to build a vertical slice of my game which I can hopefully launch on Kickstarter to make the rest of it.

It's a lot of work but the prototype was fun and there's lots of interesting stuff to do but could only get about a third of what I wanted, financially.

Exciting and also kind of anxiety inducing. Clocks ticking.
