A place to share alternatives to popular online services that can be self-hosted without giving up privacy or locking you into a service you don't control.

Rules:

  1. Be civil: we're here to support and learn from one another. Insults won't be tolerated. Flame wars are frowned upon.

  2. No spam posting.

  3. Posts have to be centered around self-hosting. There are other communities for discussing hardware or home computing. If it's not obvious why your post topic revolves around selfhosting, please include details to make it clear.

  4. Don't duplicate the full text of your blog or github here. Just post the link for folks to click.

  5. Submission headline should match the article title (don’t cherry-pick information from the title to fit your agenda).

  6. No trolling.

  7. No low-effort posts. This is subjective and will largely be determined by the community member reports.

It's become somewhat of a trend over the last several months for new projects to describe themselves as 'modern'. Not only is this not a helpful descriptor (What is 'modern'? Is the design modern? The codebase?), but a good portion of the time it's simply not true.

I keep seeing 'blazing/blazingly fast' everywhere too, with a rocket or such emoji

My favorite is 'fast and lightweight' followed by 'RAM required >500MB' for a some kind of basic server.

Over 10,000 Docker Hub images found leaking credentials, auth keys

That's rather disconcerting.

Your account is tagged as a bot so it shows a robot icon next to you

A couple of people have mentioned that. I went into settings and unticked the 'bot' option, not sure how it cot ticked, saved, and for some reason still people are saying I am tagged as a bot. Weird.

Thanks! Definitely going to spend some time with the media managers this weekend. Replacing 4 separate-but-connected-or-related apps into one would be amazing.
