The amount of corruption in the modern world is just astounding.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 11 points 1 day ago

The Olympic Committee is shoveling money into the trunks of their cars while the world is watching FIFA.

[–] mcv@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 day ago

Oh yes, bribery has clearly been disproven now. It was very convincing.

[–] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 159 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So FIFA got rid of the bribery charge from this administration by bribing this administration with a pointless award. Cool, cool.

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 62 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

The charge was 'You didn't bribe me' and obviously now that they have, the charge has been dropped.

[–] harmbugler@piefed.social 16 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

That's what's so great about bribery, if there's any problem you just bribe some more.

Sorry poors, it's just for rich people.

It's a big fucking club, and you ain't in it. You and I are not in the club.

Saw him live delivering his "fuck Tiger Woods" and "fuck Lance Armstrong" set a long time ago. It should be noted how prescient this was because neither of those celebrities had their fall from grace yet. He was ranting against the very idea of celebrity worship and being told who to admire.

Some people in the audience left after that and he responded by saying it was going to get a lot fucking worse so it's good that you're leaving.

Dude was a fucking legend, and I'm still happy that I saw him before he died. He ruled that room, and I've been to other comedy shows, but none in my experience captivated the crowd and spoke as much truth as he did.

[–] stringere@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

I wish I'd had a chance to see him live. He truly changed my life and helped shape my worldview at an early age.

I'll just leave this wall of beauty here:

A Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete...

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.

Remember, to say, 'I love you' to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

If you don't send this to at least 8 people....Who cares?

[–] guy@piefed.social 24 points 1 day ago

Hahaha is this for real?
It's not the bribery that is infuriating, it's the blatant openness of it all

[–] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Corrupt criminals helping other corrupt criminals.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Thick as thieves.

This is exactly what it means.

[–] Insekticus@aussie.zone 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

At least we're getting a solid list for the gallows when the revolution kicks off lol

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

Pfft, gallows. This is America. We solve our problems with gunpowder and lead.

FIFA bribery charges dropped after Trump given bribe under scrutiny

Fixed the headline

[–] vodkasolution@feddit.it 8 points 1 day ago

Now please media, ask the players what they think of that. Even if the average soccer player is an ignorant, please ask: laughing assured.

[–] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 62 points 2 days ago (3 children)

They aren't even trying to hide the corruption at this point.

[–] radiofreebc@lemmy.world 50 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Why bother hiding it? It's not like Americans are doing anything about it.

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If this goes much farther, in a few months they might spend a weekend waving signs around!

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Let's be fair, it's very difficult to organise this type of thing. It's not as if we are living in an age of instant communication and information...

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago

It's going to get much worse.

Consider, now that a number of high profile individuals and corporations have paid Trump off - those same people are going to be hawkish about others paying that price, since they'll feel it isn't fair they 'had' to but others don't.

Now it's not just a deal under the table, the players want to see the bribe happening, to ensure "fairness".

We're in for a hell of a ride.

[–] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

When have they ever tried to hide it?

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I wonder who they'll choose for their next one?

[–] lando55@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

haha any of the three scenarios is equally hilarious:

  1. They stop giving these out altogether because it's a tradition they never expected to have to do more than once
  2. They give it to someone else in the hopes of furthering whatever agenda they have next year
  3. They just keep giving it to Trump
[–] MrMakabar@slrpnk.net 12 points 1 day ago

You got to hand it to Infantino. I thought that going lower then the "I feel a migrant worker" speech was impossible, but the cut off hands dooming earth award for Trump might just do it.

[–] jubilationtcornpone@sh.itjust.works 43 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The news has prompted scrutiny online, though there is no evidence of any connection between the award and prosecutors' move to dismiss the charges.

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

But it steps like a goose.

Corrupt as fuck

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 28 points 2 days ago

FIFA, IOC, and probably most of the sports associations are corrupt as fuck, especially with the ME countries sportswashing them too.

It's football now, haven't you heard?

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

And football is Trumpball now.

[–] angstylittlecatboy@reddthat.com 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Do you call it the Gulf of America too?

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I'll be deep in the ground before I play along with that kind of shallow pandering.

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Isn't it the Gulf of Amerigo ?

[–] webghost0101@sopuli.xyz 16 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

This administrations brand is to sell government work (or non work) for personal favours and there literally accepting “exposure” as payment to signal how normalised they made it.

If you are a big enough name they don’t care how petty the bribe is. As long as it shows the world that they are open for this kind off business.

Every bribe, no matter how small is pure profit if you never owned what you’re selling.

And there it is.

[–] tiredofsametab@fedia.io 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My brain cannot handle this headline. What is "under scrutiny" modifying here?

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

The second paragraph of the article answers this. The headline could have been better, yes.

[–] gigachad@piefed.social 8 points 2 days ago
[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It would have been one good thing for FIFA leaders to get charged with bribery.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No, you don't understand. They were actually being charged for not enough bribery.

[–] hopesdead@startrek.website 2 points 1 day ago

What Futurama bullshit is this?

So that's what it is about.

[–] Vizzerdrix@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

These prosecutions are not consistent with the current prosecutorial priorities of the United States, which direct the Department of Justice’s resources into Making America Safe Again.

So charges are dropped not because he seems innocent, but because of political direction of justice now which must be focused on deporting innocent immigrants and building Reich 4.0
