AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

This will only end badly. And I mean racist Goofy meme videos targeted to children badly.

Can't wait to see Lego Yoda: A Ketamine Story

[–] Peruvian_Skies@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 days ago

I'd actually watch that.

Say what you want about Altman, he is a fantastic grifter. Instead of suing the shit out of his worthless hypebag bullshit machine “company”, they’re… paying… him… to license their characters…? These corporations have lost their goddamn minds for this snake oil

[–] Bakkoda@lemmy.world 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Disney needs to write off a billion asap. That's literally all I see. Invest in AI? You already lost money and you need a voided check.

At this point I genuinely believe OpenAI knows they're doomed. They are putting all their effort into these massive deals, trying to tie themselves to as many other companies as they can until they are "too big to fail". Then when they go bankrupt, trump won't allow the stock market to crash, so the government will step in and pay everyone out. Maybe these other companies are just trying to get in on the grift while they can.

[–] mvirts@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

I have read 0 facts about this, but I bet that the billion 'investment' is mostly just IP license values.

[–] november@piefed.blahaj.zone 121 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oh, so the slop generator gets to use Disney's characters, but they'll sue a daycare for painting Mickey Mouse on the wall. I see how it is.

The mouse doesn't expect you to like it. The mouse expects you to endure it.

[–] LiveLM@lemmy.zip 34 points 3 days ago

Disney is perhaps the one company on earth powerful enough to put AI companies on their place regarding all the copyright shit.
How fucking naive of me to not realize they'd join up instead

[–] aesthelete@lemmy.world 32 points 3 days ago (1 children)

"its characters" bitch half of your characters are just ripped off from fairy tales

[–] mtpender@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 days ago

And the other half were just bought by them rather than their own creations.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 70 points 3 days ago (4 children)

This seems wild. This is the last thing I would have expected. Maybe Disney knows they stand no chance against AI and just want to profit from the doom it will bring.

[–] BCOVertigo@lemmy.world 66 points 3 days ago

I think it has less to do with their product and more to do with backroom executive bullshit manipulating stock prices, but that's just an armchair opinion.

[–] UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 31 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (4 children)

I think their intent is to create a fuck ton of cheap AI media to flood Disney+ because even their shitty crap costs a lot to produce. If Disney can create content basically for free they could see a pretty big benefit.

Cutting paid animators out of animation has been the disney dream since Walt was still blowing Nazis.

Amen. Artist have always gotten treated like shit and Walt was a miserable prick to his workers.

It'll make the green line go up and that's all they care about. I completely agree that it seems they won't be able to do anything to stop it so they might as well try and make money from it.

They might change their tune once the slop video generators are pumping out officially licensed scenes of Elsa getting gang banged.

[–] KelvarCherry@lemmy.blahaj.zone 24 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Elsa and Spiderman pregante

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

Could it be possibly that they’re pregonate?

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Both of them preganate by each other

OPENAI, is seeking some poor sucker to hold the bag before the bubble burst. disney will regret it.

[–] emerald@lemmy.blahaj.zone 53 points 3 days ago

Given Walt's own relationship with his animators this is actually very on brand

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Looks like I will be rediscovering the joys of reading books.

Just executives milking their company for as much money as they can. They don't care for their brand. If it makes them money, they'll totally let Disney slide into an AI content slop hell scape. Ruining the reputation and quality of their product, then bounce with their severance and bonuses when stocks start to fall. Just to go off and do it all over again with another company.

[–] Yeller_king@reddthat.com 12 points 3 days ago (3 children)

What I don't get is how are they even milking their IP? They are paying OpenAi to use their IP (in exchange for equity in an unprofitable company).

I'd understand it better if Disney were getting a billion dollars.

[–] Peruvian_Skies@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They think they'll get to make movies without paying any writers, actors or directors and still make the same amount of money off them.

all of disney+ catalog can be found on the high seas :)

[–] s@piefed.world 27 points 3 days ago

Now your kids can make their own completely unregulated Spider-Man and Elsa content at home

[–] jlow@discuss.tchncs.de 18 points 3 days ago

I love how this should be the other way round (the slop company paying the content "owners") but thanks to turbo capitalism the world get's fucked up in new disgusting ways every day!

[–] J92@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

God, I didn't think i could want OpenAI to crash even more than I already did!

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm still very AI ignorant but why would disney go all in on AI when I can just tell my own AI to make up a "disney-like" movie for me and skip the middle-man (disney).

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 8 points 2 days ago

They have more lawyers than you

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 22 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Why spend money advertising your old mouse when the kids will do it for you?

Disney movies will be AI generated from here on out.

Think about it, simulating real actors or their voices has strings attached. Talking cats don't sue, or require wages.

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 14 points 3 days ago

Well someone is getting nervous about Marvel’s future

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 days ago

Rule 34 anybody?

[–] Gork@sopuli.xyz 15 points 3 days ago

Conveniently, the AI models are probably already trained on Disney characters to begin with. Definitely a cash grab though.

[–] Baguette@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

So now does this mean you can just say it was ai generated and you can't get sued by disney /s

I wonder if they're going to have special rules what you can and can't do with them.
