breaks into house while owner isn't there, steals gun collection

It's gonna be cops breaking into your house.. and then they're allowed to kill you because you have a gun.

But if you shoot back and dont die you're going to jail forever

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 10 points 1 day ago

Well, it depends. You can absolutely shoot cops in self defense if they do something like a no knock raid, which they love to do these days

Now, do you make it out of the situation alive, and win in court? That's a coin flip

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

What if they break in and you’re naked?

[–] notaviking@lemmy.world 46 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Living in South Africa, I had to reluctantly get a gun, hate it but after they shot my neighbours leg off through her daughter's window I knew I had no choice because I had 3 other women living with me.

I will call it a successful gun ownership if I never have to use it, I really do not wish to be placed in that situation.

Having seen people be killed by firearms in front of me, the police's apathy as they were giggling at me when they saw my red eyes and saying it's what rural poor people do (I think it was their way of comforting me).

Some gun owners are reluctant owners, but really when you have as high a violent crime and murder rate as we do, you have to make a difficult choice.

There's a huge difference between being a gun owner and a gun nut.

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 3 points 22 hours ago

And unfortunately a lot of people on here don't understand the difference

I will call it a successful gun ownership if I never have to use it

This describes the overwhelming majority of firearms owners I’ve interacted with, including some with sizable collections and even a police officer on the SWAT team.

To date I still find it incredibly weird how the US normalised bloodlust and murderous intent to the point where a considerable chunk of the country considers it their patriotic duty to protect their rights to keep weapons primarily intended for killing while presenting obvious signs of mental instability - as depicted.

[–] CascadiaRo@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago

Ever learn about “the shot heard around the world”?

The country was literally born from a rebellion that reached a violent tipping point when the monarchy tried to confiscate/destroy munitions.

as depicted

The “depiction” you refer to is a caricature. While I’m certain there are people like this out there, this is not what the majority of firearms owners are actually like.

US isn't the only capitalist country over there, but the only one with this much hate per gdp point

[–] pimento64@sopuli.xyz 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Because the working class must not be disarmed no matter what

[–] wischi@programming.dev 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So you need an armed working class for what exactly? To watch Trump dismantle your democracy? You probably don't need guns if you are just watching anyway 🤣

[–] pimento64@sopuli.xyz 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)
[–] chunes@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

You're allowed to own a tank, too. You should probably get on that.

[–] pimento64@sopuli.xyz 1 points 4 hours ago

Allowed? Governments can only regulate, they can't allow people to do things because they simply don't have the ability to bestow rights, which people intrinsically possess. Anyway, I've looked into it but the upkeep is shocking. There's a reason that one dude just encased a bulldozer in concrete.

[–] FartMaster69@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yup, I’m willing to disarm when police and military are similarly disarmed and not a moment before.

[–] pimento64@sopuli.xyz 3 points 17 hours ago

I support disarming everyone except the working class, and just keeping it that way.

Exactly. I've seen this exact sentiment several times. "When someone breaks into my home..." They are certain it will happen, it's just a matter of when.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

and when it doesn't they shoot a cleaner that rings the wrong bell through the door

[–] BanMe@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

"Ding-dong-ditch once again ends in tragedy..."

Or my favorite of all time, when someone (often a teenager) who's lost or scared comes up to a door and the occupant shoots them rather than help.

[–] CascadiaRo@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago

“Go ahead, make my day”

That kind of mentality sickens me

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago (7 children)

GOD... PLEASE HAVE SOMEONE BREAK INTO MY HOUSE

someone breaks into the dude's house, attracted to the valuable arsenal; promptly seizes one of the guns and uses it against the owner; loots all of them, stepping over the owner slowly bleeding out on the floor

I like the term "Ammosexuals" for those idiots.

When you have a case full of hammers you’re gonna want to find a nail.

[–] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago (3 children)

This is a valid criticism of all hobbies tbf of course the problem with guns is that theyre for killing. I like knives but that means i get excited when i can open a package or cut something up in the garden, not that i want to plug someone in the head with a handheld canon.

[–] 0x0@lemmy.zip 1 points 7 hours ago

i get excited when i can open a package

Ooooh unboxing videos?

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean... Have you shot many guns?

They're really fun to shoot things with. I love the metal targets that go plink when you hit them, it's cool hitting something so far away you can barely see it

Shooting is just fun, just like throwing knives or axes. You don't have to have any intention to use it for violence, or even own one yourself

[–] AI_toothbrush@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You know we have gun ranges in europe without the whole school shooting part because the gun stays at the gun range?

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 6 points 1 day ago

Cool? Kinda proves my point, guns are just fun to shoot

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago (8 children)

Some of us just like sport shooting. If someone does break into my house they're gonna get perforated, but that doesn't mean I want it to happen. Shit like that is traumatizing and therapy is expensive.

the weird thing is...

I'm okay with lots of blood, but I don't like watching surgery. and yet I'm ok with stabbing somebody repeatedly in the vitals if they break into my house.

you might ask 1st: why the fuck are you watching surgery?! because I have to, for my medical field training. why I have to watch human surgery when I'm planning to be a marine biologist, I have no idea. 2nd: what does surgery have to do with stabbing somebody? cause you'll see their guts and stuff, and you see peoples guts in surgery too
