Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

To be fair on PC older games very often got expansion disks. On top of that people with nostalgia tend to forget a lot of games used to release with game breaking glitches and just never get updated because that wasn't possible.

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 7 points 1 day ago

What i really hated about that was, that you never really knew if it was a bug that got you stuck or the game is just incomprehensible. I'm looking at you, Simon's quest.

[–] tiramichu@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

The example being Sonic and Knuckles specifically is relevant, because despite being released and marketed as an expansion, that content was originally supposed to be part of Sonic 3 but was cut due to deadlines and development time.

The spanish version of the first Digimon World was literally unplayable lmao, the game had a glitch with an Agumon NPC that is a softlock and makes impossible to continue from that point

German Version Too, expect you played it in a specific order...

But to defend old games (aka when Nintendo didn't sucked): when you wanted to release a game on a Nintendo console, you had to send a tape with the full gameplay from start to finish without cheats, otherwise it wouldn't be released.

[–] FuyuhikoDate@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

Or you had game magazines :D I remember buying one specific magazine to get the patch for half life :D

Street Fighter 2 is an especially bad example.

In like 18nmonths you had:

Street Fighter II

Street Fighter II:Champion

Street Fighter II:Hyper Fighting

Super Street Fighter II

Super Street Fighter II: Turbo

Instead of microtranactions, you just bought the whole fucking game again to get Vega or M Bison as playable characters or to get a projectile for Chun-Li.

Came here for this, sf2 is worse than the sonic 3 & knuckles example. Sonic and Knuckles is a fine game on its own, combining them gives you extra content, lets you play Sonic 3 as knuckles, and it even does some minor things for Sonic 1 and 2 as a bonus.

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 50 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Sonic and Knuckles was its own game. As a bonus it added Knuckles to the previous games.

[–] GiantRobotTRex@lemmy.sdf.org 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

When you plug Sonic 3 into Sonic & Knuckles, that's what Sonic 3 was intended to be. But they couldn't finish it in time, so they split them into separate games. That's why when you play Sonic 3 & Knuckles, you don't just play Sonic 3 as Knuckles, you play through both Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles (as opposed to Sonic 2 where you only play through Sonic 2 levels as Knuckles).

Absolutely, and it makes all three games better for it. But I don't know anyone who had Sonic & Knuckles that felt they got an incomplete or bad game. Yes. S3&K is "more complete", with the Super and Hyper Emeralds. It's a peanut butter & chocolate deal.

Except that it wasn't. It was the second half of Sonic 3. You had to buy both Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles to get the full Sonic 3 experience as the developers originally intended.

BTW, everyone probably already knows this by now, but Michael Jackson produced a good chunk of the soundtrack. However, he left partially through production when the child abuse allegations started and thus went uncredited.

Vaguely gestures towards the multiple versions of Pokémon.

[–] cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

and a cartridge that didn't have to connect to the internet to download before playing

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 5 points 1 day ago

When i look back, games definitely weren't all great. But what made them great was that you could plug them in and play. When you had a friend over, you could give him a controller and he could play, the games usually explained themselves.

I still play online with friends, but even with all the games steam has to offer, we often just play nothing. I don't like extraction shooters and call of duty games, my friends don't like pve games, this game is too complicated, here you have to play for 20 hours to get to the fun bit....

We actually got a whole lot more in terms of swag in the box. Maps, tokens, figures, etc.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Or at least a manual that actually contained substantive information.

[–] Duke_Nukem_1990@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Reading that in the car on the way home was such a magical experience.

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 1 points 1 day ago

It sounds so sad, but these are some of my best memories. I don't think people will ever understand the joy of reading while imagining what the game actually plays like

[–] JeeBaiChow@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Seriously. Imagine if silksong had a swag bag. Itd make a killing.

I mean. It'd have made even more of a killing.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I dont remember arcades being free

[–] Endymion_Mallorn@kbin.melroy.org 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's talking only about home consoles & PCs.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Idk man it says old games and there are 2 arcade games there.

[–] Endymion_Mallorn@kbin.melroy.org 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I mean, I would assume that the SF2 is the SNES version, but if not, it could be Amiga, Saturn, or another version.

But, wait, "2"?

The games shown are:

Super Mario Bros. 3 | Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link: Sonic the Hedgehog

Street Fighter 2

Sonic and Knuckles | [meme]

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus -1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Super Mario Bros 3 and Street Fighter 2 both had arcade versions. Which I just want to point out is just a previous iteration of monetization bullshit.

[–] Endymion_Mallorn@kbin.melroy.org 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Okay, fair, but this is about the home releases. And I'd argue that PC-10 SMB3 is just the NES version, but instead of the KMart kiosks, you had to pay for it.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah, its only ever been as bad as technology has allowed, and this trend shows it will only get worse. Dont really see how that doesnt pertain to the meme but ok chief.

[–] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone -1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Not exactly. Instead of DLCs you had sequels.

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 11 points 2 days ago

As opposed to not having sequels today? What are you smoking and where can I get some?

but the sequels were good
