Perfect fit

[–] viking 14 points 2 days ago

Chill bro, we didn't need another reason not to visit. We got it.

[–] umbraroze@slrpnk.net 15 points 2 days ago (2 children)

🤦🏻‍♀️ What about the people who don't use social media? Or have used social media for less than 5 years?

Or people who disclose a suspiciously wholesome 5 years of social media use? Or use social media platforms that allow backdated posts - how well are those going to be scrutinised?

Why am I even asking? This is all so stupid. People only want to travel to places where they won't be immediately grilled on what they think of the dictator. (...Out of curiosity, what's the process like for North Korea? Strictly for comparison.)

I'm pretty sure the only posts I've put on Facebook in the past five years are all a version of, "Hey, I'm just checking in so y'all know I'm still alive." I haven't updated my personal information on there in about a decade.

Dear Trump administration... I've already decided never to visit the US, you don't have to sell it to me.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 186 points 3 days ago (14 children)

Yet another reason to avoid the US as a tourist. Looks like hotels and airlines did not bribe Trump sufficiently.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 32 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Seriously, this is so stupid. I'm never setting foot in US soil ever again.

None of you better come here. I'm not saying this because I don't want you here, I'm saying it because we are literally on fire right now. We have a lot of finding out to do.

[–] HugeNerd@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago

Check under your couch for Russians. Or Venezuelans. Or is it Chinese? Whatever it is, it's certainly not a home-made problem.

[–] cabillaud@lemmy.world 58 points 3 days ago (2 children)

The US are really working hard to get prohibition, 30's great depression, and McCarthyism all at once.

[–] Tja@programming.dev 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Some other things from the 30s, too.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The snazzy European uniforms?

Wow. Even China doesn't do that.

edit Might be that they don't need to get it from you

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Ikr? Yet people are so afraid to visit China by contrast...

(Not that I blame theme)

People are already boycotting the us, they don't need another reason.

[–] Typotyper@sh.itjust.works 52 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Tourism is only down 30% or so. So maybe they do need more reasons.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 16 points 3 days ago (4 children)

I can't believe it's so little. Do they not know what's happening here?

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 20 points 3 days ago

People are into sunk costs and book well in advance. A lot of that 30% is no-money-back cancellations.

Wait until you see next year.

"In addition to social media histories, Customs and Border Protection would add other new data collection fields, including email addresses and telephone numbers used in the last five years, as well as the addresses and names of family members, the notice reads."

Wtf I was planning to visit NYC but this is crazy man.

More realistically: tourists will just stop coming here.

Maybe that's the intent?

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 6 points 2 days ago

I mean it genuinely is, seems like others are still in denial and not getting the message.

European: Haha, yeah I hate foreigners too! Now, onto our vacation in the Florida Keys-

Trump: No, you. I meant you. Get out.

Wow. Next year's World Cup is going to be either the biggest debacle, or played to empty stadiums (in the USA anyway). What a complete and utter fuck up.

[–] YeahIgotskills2@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Lol - looks like my old man is never getting to the US. He posts at least 1 meme a day on Facebook that comedically shits on Trump. It's become something of an obsession.

Meanwhile, my brother-in-law is hoping to get to Boston with my nephew to watch Scotland play at the world cup. He's been frantically un-liking dad's posts and deleting his own for days.

[–] BoycottTwitter@lemmy.zip 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I've been sending emails to hotel companies and urging them to oppose this. I urge you to contact your congresspeople and also companies in the travel, hospitality and tourism industry and demand they oppose this policy and more broadly ask them to stand up to Trump because he's causing people to rightfully boycott the US.

Also to everyone who is boycotting the US thank you so so much, I'm really grateful and as are so many Americans who also hate what the Trump regime is doing. The more people who boycott the more pressure it will put on companies to finally stand up against the Trump regime.

You think it's going to stop there? US citizens will soon have to do the same, or be on the no fly list.

Ok so if I have to travel to the US for work, I will now require my employer to give me a burner phone with a burner number.

How will they prove that I have any social media history?

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 28 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

If you can't prove Social Media history, you don't get in, they arrest you, and deport you to a life sentence in an El Salvador torture prison where you'll never be heard from again.

Just tell your employer you're not going.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 45 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

It depends on their relationship with the social media companies. There's a good chance companies like Meta have already given the authorities a lot of data on their users. US law enforcement might already know about some of your accounts based on your identity, and then claiming you have none might not work well.

Have you heard about 'age verification' to 'protect the children'? You too will be age verified. They will know all your accounts. That's the whole point of age verification. It is to eliminate anonymity.

Yea yea got it, US geography is all nice and that but I am not trying to visit there until there is zero chance of getting detained by ICE or border control "because of reasons".

[–] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

You can always be white and rich, that usually works.

We have already postponed our Disney trip until the cheeto is gone.

I am prepared to go to Europe or Japan instead though if America can't figure its issues out.

Then again I'm not the target for this type of tyrannical despotism because there's absolutely no chance I'd ever willingly visit that place.

Soon it will be easier to visit North Korea than the USA, which I suspect is the plan.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I guess I'm going have to get some sort of Social Media account that I don't currently use, and keep up with fake postings, just so I have something to show the Redhats when they stop my on the street and say "Ihre papiere, bitte!"

What makes them think that I even have a 5 year old account on any social media platform?
