"Do your own research."

"Okay, here's a stack of white papers 40' high all agreeing with my claim."

"You fucking idiot. That's not what I meant. Watch this cheaply animated YouTube video to learn the Real Truth."

[–] Aneb@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago (2 children)

And its actually a PragerU video. My catholic high school showed us those videos and they were all laughably bad. But now they are showing this slop to public school children.

I about shit my pants when I saw Oklahoma was inviting them into their classrooms.

Reminds me of when I lived in Idaho and they brought guest speakers into my children's school to explain that watching porn makes people serial killers.

Edit: and now Oklahoma has invited Turning Point

There's an eclipse today... you really sholud stop staring at it like that

Well, this is every day, it's just that the eclipse is the scenario where people are stupid enough to stare at it anyway.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

i mean an annular eclipse is gorgeous

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And safe to look at, while in totality....

Outside of totality, meh, sun looks about the same except the shape...

[–] rhythmisaprancer@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Total and annular are two different things, save your eyes 🙂

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ah, you are right, wasn't thinking. Never seen one myself, though totality was something to behold, but once even a smidge of sunlight was directly visible, seemed pretty boring to me, I would guess an annular would be similarly be pretty boring, sure an unusual shape but roughly similar to just normal sunlight...

It's true that annular may not be as exciting as total, but still pretty neat. If either one ever happens close enough for you to see I hope you can make it! Totally worth it.

Heaven's Gate

Thank fully I now associate an excellent Florida Punk band with that term.

[–] serpineslair@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Holy shit, you listen to Heaven's Gate?! Thought I was the only one! Hell yeah!

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nice. A random find for me, either here on lemmyverse or Bagel Radio.

c/trashmetal
crossover supergroup including Tony Foresta from Iron Reagan/Municipal Waste and Paul from Cannibal Corpse.

I didn't know that. How is that music anything other than Punk? OK, the drummer is a little too good maybe, but that's not exclusionary.

I guess it doesn't matter either way but I very rarely like anything that is labeled '-metal'.

PS: judging from the upvotes there must be one more person who knows.

[–] serpineslair@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Take a listen to this...

Some trademark crossover (thrash metal meets punk), also the same vocalist! He was originally from this band. It might show how they are more interlinked then it seems. Any of that band's later releases are still crossover, but more metal infused, if you still struggle to hear the connection.

If you need any more advice or want to explore the genre further, myself and a few others are pretty well versed in this stuff. Feel free to pop a question in the community, we are pretty active and have made daily posts for years, so plenty to sink your teeth into 🤘.

Take a listen to this…

Love the music, the band name, the cover.

If this is considered trashmetal/punk I might need to revise my prejudice.

I associate '-metal' with certain mannerisms, often most expressed in the vocals, that I simply hate. Maybe a particular type of growling, but it goes further than that.

There's one or two albums I like that would probably be '-metal' if they had a different singer.

[–] serpineslair@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah you can pretty much find any kind of vocals in metal. Even within thrash metal tbh. It's also thrash not trash btw (I don't mean this in a passive aggressive way btw).

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (1 children)

thrash not trash

oops. That's different. No offense taken though; considering the comparison to punk I feel entitled to having made that mistake.

[–] serpineslair@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

Yeah it's just a minor thing really, didn't really feel the need/desire to correct you, however I recognise if no one ever corrected anyone, we wouldn't learn much haha.

[–] logicbomb@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The people who have spent so much time and money manipulating and controlling these human failures obviously wouldn't want them all to off themselves.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

There was Jonestown.

And Heaven’s Gate, from OP’s title…

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I mean, Jonestown was kinda crazy just because of its proximity to MKUltra and several other high profile efforts by government agencies to manipulate public perception and behavior. Heaven's Gate (and the Branch Davidians at Waco) have some similar parallels.

No shortage of speculation about how these organizations were originally formed, why they got such high profile media coverage relative to similar groups, and what turned them from somewhat goofy religious grandstanding exercises into deeply depressed suicide cults.

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

The ATF was found to have falsified charges initially to justify Waco. There was at least one federally licensed gun retailer at Waco. They were also using a loophole to modify rifles.

[–] logicbomb@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Yes, I said they wouldn't want them all to off themselves, but they don't care if some, or even if a lot of people die, as long as it's not too many.
