I expect nothing but calm and collected responses from the regimes in question. What a perfect game to make a statement.

They will exchange jerseys at the end of the match, then kiss.

Well, considering the history of Stonewall, Pride Marches, and LGBT's harassment by the police in the US, it seems appropriate to have Egypt's and Iran's participation in these pride marches.

[–] teslasaur@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You wanna compare the treatment of lgbtq in the us to Iran and Egypt? Really?

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world -1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

The treatment of LGBT in the US just within the last generation? Yeah. Harvey Milk and Stonewall were just within my mom's lifetime, universal gay marriage was just recognized, and there is a conserted and zealous effort to undo everything so as to kill the gays again here in the west (they're even trying to divide and conquer by erasing the T in LGBT). This isn’t even to get into the craze that happened with the military's "friend of Dorothy" debacle.

*Edit: one more thing, the Trump administration and Pam Bondi have just targeted the LGBT again with a new directive to the FBI.

**Edit 2: Upstairs Lounge Attack where a gay club was firebombed and the churches refused to burry the victims? That was just 50 years ago.

Yup. But atleast you don't get beaten to death or put in jail. But nice try at equating past US to current Iran and Egypt.

Nah, we just torture them into suicide.

But really, it wasn't until the pride marches that things started to change. The best thing is for the communities in those countries to unite in pride marches. Don't gate keep an LGBT pride marcher just because the marcher is from the "wrong" country.

The fuck are you on about? I what way am i against pride marches? Are you high or something?

You are quoting and refering to things that are 50+ years old. We already know that conversion is cruel and torture. But we don't do that anymore. Which is why i think Iran and Egypt has a few things to learn NOW.

I what way am i against pride marches

Did I say marches or marchers? Look at what this participation shows—change; not necessarily in the old stance of the governments, but in the culturally powerful in those countries. So, while they have things to learn NOW, they are changing and this participation should be applauded.

You are quoting and refering to things that are 50+ years old.

I don't know if you realize the age of those in power, but this was in the lifetime of those again trying to use government power to eliminate the LGBT population. They broadcasted it, and now they're going to do it. The old guard here just hasn't died off that quickly.

[–] teslasaur@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I guarantee they aren't "participating" freely. That is the whole point. Which is funny.

The ones that you worry about are, as they always are, religiously guided. Get rid of religion and get rid of the problem.

Take the initial olive branch now, then work on bettering things down the road.

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They're already playing soccer, what more do you want?

[–] teslasaur@lemmy.world 0 points 3 days ago

*football, not hand egg.

[–] lunelovegood@ttrpg.network 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

This is soccer?

I have a feeling the average international soccer fan doesn't take too kindly to queer ideals.

After FIFA gave Trump the Peace Prize participation trophy, he announced that he thought we should call soccer football, and the NFL should think of something else.

In before he suggests Trumpball. You know it's coming.

[–] teslasaur@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Oh please no.

I know you are just being difficult for no reason, so i am probably wasting my time typing this, but please remember that britain came up with the name soccer to reduce the confusion between rugby football and assosiation football, but for some reason it didn't stick in its country of origin. Association football IS also called soccer, and britain came up with both names. Football is a generic term that refers to any variation of rugby such as soccer, american football, gridiron football, as well as a couple others.

[–] undergroundoverground@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yes, you are wasting your time with that but not for the reasons you think.

"Britain" didn't come up with the name "soccer." You're anthropomorphising a chunk of land.

A small number of very posh students from Oxford University gave it that, as a nickname. Just for reference, these are the people who also call rugby "rugga."

Basically, an American heard it and confused it with the actual name of the sport and was stupid enough to convince you all to call it that.

There's someone in Britain right now who calls it punty kick chase. I can assure you that name is wrong too and you would look silly if you tried to justify you also calling it that by saying "Britain came up with punty kick chase."

"The whole world calls it football. Are we so out of touch?

No, it's the rest of the world who are wrong."

[–] teslasaur@lemmy.world -2 points 2 days ago

It's football. Now you know.
