This is exactly the reason Europe might fight corruption with every measure. Tackle the far right-enabling groups and dry up the far-right finances. Let them become yelling hounds in a desert. Let them suffer the consequences of being a fascist.

yep and protecting democracy by attacking disinformation and ensuring free and fair elections

If you haven't seen it, go watch Continuum. Great show where they predict a very similar "Corporate Congress" that rules the world. Different type of dystopian hell.

One of the last gems of the second golden age of sci-fi. Truly a great production, and tackles an issue that is becoming more and more relevant with every other day.

Such a great show!

I used to find parts of the plot (privately sponsored police and the slide towards corporate dystopia) a bit too far fetched when the show was airing. But in the last few years various news stories have reminded me of Continuum on more than one occasion.

Chat control wants to enslave Europe.

Literally nothing to do with the content of the article.

Itโ€™s related as surveillance is the tool of authoritarians. The East Germans kept detailed copies of the citizens.

There's little about surveillance in Chat Control. It's very limited and measured legislation. If that's the worst we will have in EU it's pretty amazing.

This was always the plan. You didnt think theyd let us have it (the internet) without a plan to control it

[โ€“] fruitycoder@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 months ago

"They" didn't make the Internet. No single entity holds a singular plan for it let alone controls the destiny of it.

This a coop. An attempt to press the advantages and controls they have built for decades to gain further political influence. There are other factions though, and there always will be.

We may not be able to take it easy now, but we sure as hell can still take it back

US stopped being a democracy long time ago. People didn't have real constitutional rights for decades now.

The arguments about Europe following the same path are pretty weak though. Using US technology is not really the same letting corporations set the rules. Don't get me wrong, I don't think EU is doing that well. Corpos definitely have to much power and will try to take over everything but I think we still have a chance. US is lost.

Not for nothing but that is a fantastic design.
