When new tech was cool and not trying to copy CRapple with their elitist status symbol design philosophy and pricing.

Idk imo it's kinda exciting to see when companies introduce a new phone that's 2-5mm larger, has 10% more computing power than previous years model and comes now in pastel orange!

They're coming for our volume buttons next. You can fucking feel it.

I would like a camera cover as standard equipment on my phone.

You'd figure someone's gotta be making phone cases w lens covers, but I haven't run across them come to think of it.

These things were either expensive or fragile. But still cool.

That is false.

Sometimes they were both.

"And" and "or" can both mean either and or or

"Things that break in two years for $400, Alex?"

So, like, all the new smartphones. And before you say "mine lasts much longer" so did my old gadget phones.

You didn't use the camera that often back then. None of the flippy bits on my Nokia 6680, N70 or N97 ever failed. The N95 slide got a little crunchy after 10 years, but I believe I mostly fixed it by cleaning the rails.

there's a reason why we moved away from that. That stuff has a lot of moving parts, and they tend to break much more quickly than solid-state devices.

[–] Hexarei@beehaw.org 6 points 2 weeks ago

Quiet, you. Moving parts are worth the trade-off sometimes and I will die on that hill. (She said, from her folding phone that has a hinge and bendy screen)

You can fit so many failure points in this bad boy

[–] cloudless@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago

The Nokia slide is so smooth!

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Idk, I think you're about ten years off there.
