[Mehmed II] himself crowned the Caesar of Rome recognized by the patriarch of Constantinople. Commissioned histories of Rome and Alexander the Great and tried to identify their legacy with the House of Osman. Loved the Roman styled mosaics so much he actively prevented their destruction in the aftermath of conquest of Constantinople. Seriously believed that the Christian Italians would see him as the good guy and one of them because he thought Turks share the Trojan origin with them and that it also gives him special claim on legacy of Rome.
