It looks like all airlines and pilots are afraid of the threat posed by the rogue country on the American continent - and I'm not talking about the one on the map.

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 55 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Technically the US is on the map, though. Puerto Rico is right there.

[–] TheOctonaut@mander.xyz 19 points 2 weeks ago

The president of Puerto Rico would have something to say about that.

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org -1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

That's a colony owned by the US but arguably not a part of the united states proper since PR isn't a state

[–] RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com 37 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They're all still american citizens (for now) so I'd say it counts.

[–] grindemup@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Honestly how much does that mean when they lack representatives / are unable to vote, and do not get full protection of US constitution (as per Wikipedia)? Sounds like citizens in name only..

[–] bleistift2@sopuli.xyz 22 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Doesn’t your logic also throw out anyone living in Washington, D.C.?

[–] skulblaka@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 weeks ago

Yes, and that's also a significant problem and should be illegal.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It is. But enough of them still think that going full statehood brings other evils and they're content with the sublevel of protection they have. And that is their right, we shouldn't force it on anyone who doesn't want it.

[–] brown567@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Didn't their last vote on it get 57% for statehood? I think it just wasn't approved by Congress

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rico_statehood_movement

Some of the votes were problematic because of boycotts, turnouts, and how the ballots were phrased or what they offered to vote on. I don't know what would be best for them, but that's also why I only think the offer should always be on the table and let them decide.

A big part of the issue that is also affecting other states is mentioned in that article, the capping of the House numbers. We do not have proper representation in numbers that can handle the population (and that doesn't even get into gerrymandering).

meh, you can use the same excuses every time they have an election to avoid doing anything.

[–] brown567@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

Words cannot express how much I hate the cap on House reps XD

[–] RickyRigatoni@retrolemmy.com 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Taxation without representation is a very american thing.

[–] grindemup@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

I mean, is it though? Seems like there are a whole lot of such countries.. at the very least, every country which isn't some sort of democracy.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Are you also prepared to argue the same about Native American reservations or other territories? I feel like that kind of othering is dangerous.

[–] GeneralEmergency@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

You think a pizza cutter like that even thought through what they were saying?

[–] brown567@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

I think in this situation it's probably a good thing to not be counted as part of the US, so yeah, I'd ~~absolve~~ other them too.

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 0 points 1 week ago

Othering? Sorry I'm not sure I understand your comment, are you falsely assuming I'm american? Are you saying the natives are being treated well?

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They are a state. They are not one of the states in the union. Americans forget state is just a government of a territory. The united states is just a special group of them that decided to work together.

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 1 points 1 week ago

That is what I meant

[–] Velypso@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Ok, so ... somehow it appears no one in this thread is yet aware of this:

https://www.politico.com/news/2025/11/29/trump-venezuelan-airspace-military-00670743

President Donald Trump abruptly ordered the airspace closed above and around Venezuela on Saturday, further escalating tensions between the U.S. president and Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, whom the White House accuses of working with narco-terrorist organizations to facilitate drug trafficking.

“To all Airlines, Pilots, Drug Dealers, and Human Traffickers, please consider THE AIRSPACE ABOVE AND SURROUNDING VENEZUELA TO BE CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY,” the president wrote on Truth Social Saturday morning.

https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115633041089714842

Uh, yeah, Trump effectively, unilaterally, just declared a Desert Shield/Storm style No Fly Zone.

... thats what you do before you begin a massive air campaign.

So, as of two weeks ago, the Gerald R Ford was near Venezuela...

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/aircraft-carrier-arrives-in-the-caribbean-in-major-buildup-near-venezuela/ar-AA1QxB7m

But apparently, right now, its ... sorta near the Pillars of Hercules?

https://www.cruisingearth.com/ship-tracker/united-states-navy/uss-gerald-r-ford/

Uh anyways yeah, looks like we're gonna be doing a bit of involuntary regime change on Venezuela,

...

The Dollar, the PetroDollar, is currently imploding.

Japan is unwinding its decades long carry trade that had been greatly propping up the US financial system, China's not buying any more US debt instruments, uh, our entire economy is a giant scam/bet on AI...

...uh, BlackRock is currently imploding, so that means the entire Shadow Banking system of private lending is also going to blow up...

... and maybe you missed the reveal a few weeks back that a huge chunk of our 'foreign held debt' is actually held by the Cayman Islands.

Which means its actually held by Wall Street traders, doing a basis trade, which means they bought that debt on something like 100:1 leverage.

Yeah our finances and thus entire monetary system are looking very bad right now.

Did I mention how treasury yields keep popping outside of the Fed's control channel?

AKA: The Fed is losing the ability to actually set interest rates?

So, with that in mind:

If... you can secure all or a large chunk of VZ's oil...

... well, maybe... that props up the USD PetroDollar a bit more, for a while longer.

[–] tja@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

What is happening with Black Rock?

[–] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 12 points 2 weeks ago

Various hedgefunds have been really struggling. IDK about Blackrock as a whole, but I know that the company I currently work for was until very recently owned by Blackrock and shortly after the acquisition an investigation by the DOL concluded and the resulting media shitstorm caused a lot of customers to break contract in short succession. The company has not been profitable since then. Blackrock recently sold the organization to a large bank (I forget which one) presumably at quite a loss given how much the company has shrunk since they bought it (went from 30k employees down to around 15k!)

[–] xkbx@startrek.website 40 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Here’s an article I found that may help provide context;

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/11/28/why-has-venezuela-banned-six-international-airlines-amid-us-tensions

TL;DR: Trump advises people not to fly over or to Venezuela, some airlines stop, Venezuela govt bans airlines from flying there in response

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 22 points 2 weeks ago

You can't fire me I quit vibes

[–] CelloMike@lemmy.world 37 points 2 weeks ago

Just checked and there are still some

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 21 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

So we're firmly in the Wag The Dog timeline.

Can't wait to see what Kid Rock manages to rhyme with Venezuela...

[–] JimVanDeventer@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

There is no possibility of it being anything other than genitalia.

[–] Aljernon@lemmy.today 11 points 2 weeks ago

He's gonna fail ya

Just America being a terrorist state and threatening to blow up innocent people, no biggie

[–] HarkMahlberg@kbin.earth 10 points 2 weeks ago

You can check sites like https://skyvector.com/ to see active TFRs (temporary flight restrictions). This includes near permanent ones surrounding the White House and the President's residence.

There are no TFRs around Venezuela. There are a few southeast of Puerto Rico that are for the DOD, presumably that is where they've been launching their attacks from.
