When I am asked what neoliberalism is, I always answer that it is somebody that falls into one or more of these categories:
- People that claim they're fiscally conservative but socially liberal
- People that loudly proclaim to care about the poor and working classes but only in front of crowds that can help their popularity.
- People that advocate openly for heavily means-tested social welfare so as to have the appearance of it.
- People that cherry pick their societal values and do not stick to them.
Sometimes an example is in order. Sadly, Oprah Winfrey is the epitome of what encapsulates neoliberalism. It's simply performing for a crowd, preaching help to the poor/working classes, but doing, at worst the opposite, and at best having only a token system.
