Eh, you can post, but people might just ignore it. So you're screaming into the void for the most part.

I'm a native Cantonese and Mandarin speaker, we have a Asian Diaspora comm, but most Lemmings are white westerners, so it's not gonna get much traction... but I mean... it's there... I don't think anyone has a problem with that.

I almost never post anything in Chinese because 1.4 billion of them are behind a firewall and they'll never find small platforms like the Fediverse.

I'm planning to post some poetry stuff in bilingual English and Chinese, like... its good emotional release... kinda therapudic for myself using multiple languages to engage the brain's emotions in multiple parts of the brain, only posting for personal reason tho, idc if anyone actually reads it. I don't have any friend to share it with, my stuff would be too political for Mainland Chinese internet.

Just post it, find the right community for it, if someone hates it, they have a block button for that community, or use word-blocking filters.

It's rue for most community, I would say. But it's truer for non-English speaking one (looking at my tiny French speaking instance). We really lack a tad more users ;)

You can be assured I would happily read (a lot) more poetry around here. Even more if it's not in English and even even more so if it helps me decide it's time I start learning Chinese—something I've been considering for... too many years... and now feel a bit too old to do (stupid me speaking)

In regards to readership and as a side note: I would not say I don't care if people are reading it or not myself, but I'm ok with the idea of being my own reader. Which is one of the reasons I reopened a blog a few years ago: it helps me put some order in my head.

This.

Also, to the OP: Lemmy (the Fediverse) is not owned by anyone nor by a single country, or culture. So, there is not one culture that is expected to be an 'accepting host'. We're all sharing the same space and doing our best to make it a nice place... which can work quite well provided all of us, as individuals, are welcoming to one another ;)

Thank you for your words of encouragement. I actually feel a lot better now lol, no joke.

I think just the idea of having a platform I can make anti-government content and not get censored is just beautiful. I feel sad for my compatriots in Mainland China getting censored by that shitty government.

No excuse remaining, then. Start posting that poetry! ;)

Ps: I meant it. I would happily read more poetry online, and I'm willing to bet my cup of morning coffee I'm not alone.

For what it’s worth, I (pasty-faced white guy) like seeing this stuff.

It’s just blotted out by the big (pasty-faced white guy) communities.

I have a proposal for this, actually: community “taxonomy” so smaller subs can bubble up through bigger ones. But I need to think on it some, overcome queued executive dysfunction, and raise the suggestion on the repos.

Eh, you can post, but people might just ignore it. So you're screaming into the void for the most part.

I love this analogy, and I need to expand on it.

Lemmy is like taking a pleasant walk, with mostly chill fellow hikers, through a nature preserve, and then taking turns shouting into an empty canyon.

Sometimes a nice and/or informative discussion follows during the hike back to the lodge for some hot cocoa.

咁我都用廣東話打字,逼佢哋用網上翻譯器先!

好搞笑 https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=97&v=jxA4xQbDcyE (starts at 1:37)

Only Cantonese people will get it 😆 (粗口 warning)

We accept everyone here*

*Everyone who runs the correct version of Linux, except if they use the wrong text editor.

[–] thethunderwolf@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Is openSUSE and Neovim ok?

[–] EnsignWashout@startrek.website 9 points 4 months ago

Is openSUSE and Neovim ok?

Excellent choice. You're going places!

[–] overcast5348@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Why can't you just use a butterfly to manipulate bits like a normal adult?

Kids these days with their fancy pants editors. SMH.

[–] EnsignWashout@startrek.website 2 points 4 months ago

Why can't you just use a butterfly to manipulate bits like a normal adult?

Sadly, I never learned, and C-x M-c M-butterfly, feels like cheating.

[–] pedz@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 months ago

Except that person that uses thorns in their comments. Apparently, this is not acceptable to a lot of people and they automatically downtove them.

[–] callyral@pawb.social 3 points 4 months ago

NixOS and I use Helix, Neovim and Emacs (in that order of preference)

Debian and nano?

I think you might thave invented the Linux version of "straight edge".

I choose to believe you also have no community package sources enabled, and use only the included Debian themed default desktop backgrounds.

[–] zxqwas@lemmy.world 31 points 4 months ago

If I can't read what's in it I'll just keep scrolling.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 14 points 4 months ago (2 children)

The word is "Western." You're asking about non-Western content, and the answer is: It is if you have more than like three members of your target audience, but that tends to be a tall ask around here.

[–] callyral@pawb.social 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

They didn't exclude Mexico, Central America or South America.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io -2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Yeah because those aren't Western.

[–] MissJinx@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 2 points 4 months ago

Guess again.

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

But he didn't exclude Australia and New Zealand.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Europe and the Colonial Projects (dibs on the band name)

[–] bitofarambler@crazypeople.online 13 points 4 months ago

Pretty accepting.

None of the posts I've seen from outside the americas and Europe are treated differently than the American and European posts

Perhaps less engagement due to a smaller relevant audience, which you'll also see with posts from many niche American and European communities.

[–] MisterNeon@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago

It depends if your post is cool.

[–] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 9 points 4 months ago

I'm happy to see posts from other than USian, EU, CAN. And I'm just one Lem.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 months ago

Try some and let's find out.

[–] Object@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

There's not much content to even say if there's resistance against them if any. I suppose people blocking contents in foreign language they can't read counts as one though.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 8 points 4 months ago

Uh, welcome?

[–] BlueEther@no.lastname.nz 8 points 4 months ago

Well now us white Australasians are feeling left out. then again there is a whole subreddit dedicated to maps with out new zealand so we are sort of used to it.

There seems to be a popular community ich_el I think. For German memes... I don't understand a word of it but it has multiple posts a day.

I looked it up https://feddit.org/c/ich_iel

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

As an American:

Please stay. Honestly I am sick of us. I want to lurk in South American or African or Southeastern or whatever discussions.

[–] BackgrndNoize@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I mean it's a anonymous social media, so I don't know how people can be unaccepting or accepting, rather it's a matter of are there enough users from your country

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

I don't accept you

[–] kbal@fedia.io 5 points 4 months ago

There's a French community or two hanging in there, and I sometimes see German or Greek. Surprisingly little Russian or Japanese compared to the rest of what I see of fedi, but I don't think it's got anything to do with people being "accepting" of other languages or cultures — it's just a matter of people who want to use them reaching some kind of critical mass.

[–] msokiovt@lemmy.today 5 points 4 months ago

Since it's federated, as long as it isn't bannable, it should be fine for the most part.

[–] Perspectivist@feddit.uk 4 points 4 months ago

Lemmy is not a single person but a group of individuals, and although most of them seem to share the same brain, there's still a minority of users present with differing opinions, so it's impossible to give a conclusive answer. It's kind of like asking Americans' favorite color.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's an anonymous message board - what does it matter what people think?

[–] Hermit_Lailoken@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

I don't worry about such things.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 months ago

My experience with Lemmy.ca is that it is mostly about american politics. It might be my subscriptions though, not sure.

[–] Rednax@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

Seeing the overwhelming amount of acceptance in the other comments is amazing. But I do need to play advocate of the devil for a second here, and mention moderation.

I assume this concent will not be in English.

But if the existing moderators do not speak the language of the content, then they cannot effectively moderate. This makes it a massive risk to allow non-english content on your instance with only English speaking moderators. Hence, I would only recommend posting such concent to instances that are natively speaking the language. For example, German and Dutch content almost exclusively exists on German and Dutch instances respectively.

[–] Realspecialguy@lemmy.world -4 points 4 months ago

Sounds like you just said "how 'bout them brown people "?!
