unlocked bootloader and id be sold. throw lineageos on it with like 2 apps and experience bliss

[–] Glifted@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

From what I understand It basically comes with their own version of lineageOS. I bought one so I'm going to get hands on with it soon if they keep their timeline

Keep me in the loop when you get it, I'm curious to know how it is and it can have a custom OS installed

[–] Glifted@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

If you're curious they talk about it quite a bit here.

One of the reasons I felt comfortable pre-ordering is they've been really upfront about their limitations and why they made the choices they made. It's definitely not for everyone but for me it seems like it solves a bunch of issues I have with smartphones (and dumbphones)

I have the phone now. It's pretty good. They are working through some initial bugs. I want to give it some time before I give a more thorough review but my first impressions are positive... more to come in awhile

Thats fair. What's using texting apps like? Do you get the original T9 experience?

[–] Glifted@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

If you want, the T9 works fine but I spend more time with the QWERTY and Sundial pads. I thought the Sundial was dumb when they announced it but I use it the most now that I have it

[–] markz@suppo.fi 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I was wondering how they got past apple's patents.

The Sundial tile isn’t really an iPod-style wheel: it’s really just a set of 9 buttons with a circle cover layered on top.

They didn't. It's the same as every bootleg ipod.

Wouldn't Apple's patents regarding the touch scroll wheel of the iPods be coming to an end sometime around now?

[–] markz@suppo.fi 4 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Don't know. The first models didn't use a touch wheel, so maybe not just yet?

Either way, this thing doesn't have it. The wheel is just for the looks with no function, making it pointless.

Is the one on the right iPod navigation and rotary dialer?

[–] EarMaster@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

It would be fun if it was a C64 type Joystick... πŸ•ΉοΈ

I have never used such a device without eventually just sticking to a single configuration. If you're going to have to switch them while you're on the road it's just gonna be annoying. If only they would have made those 2 modules into one piece that you could just turn around. Imagine if you're listening to songs using your iPod like controls and you get an SMS so you have to check all of your pockets for some keyboard module and start juggling it just to answer.

Besides that I think the price is way too high.

[–] baconmonsta@piefed.social 3 points 4 months ago

I would like a phone with a keyboard but this looks like a gimmick

is it useful or just ewaste?
