Wed 19 Nov 2025

  • Brush: Boti - Sunrise
  • Razor: Wade & Butcher The Sheffield (9/8", extra hollow ground)
  • Lather: Martin de Candre – Absinthe
  • Post Shave: Mühle – Aloe Vera
  • Fragrance: Mäurer & Wirtz – Tabac Man

@snooting@sub.wetshaving.social inspired me in yesterday's SOTD thread to reach for MdC Absinthe. Sweeter and more minty than actual absinthe's scent it's still a delightful fresh scent and made for a great shave with the W&B broadsword.

The only thing I regret about purchasing Absinthe is that I went for the small tub. These are comically tiny and even with this small Boti synth brush, it feels like loading from a sample.

Gorgeous razor! Looks like a cleaver next to the small tub :)

[–] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah, it's pretty nice feeling, too! Just the toe is a challenge to hone for me. The edge has a strong smile there and requires extra care to get it as sharp as the main part of the edge.

A challenge, but a fun one.

None quite that happy :) This W&B Fine India Steel is my most smiling edge, I think.

Then you need to find a very happy straight razor :) These look weird, but they are game changers when shaving.

[–] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh really?

I've never even considered getting one. In my mind, they were in the category of dragon-breath, fancy-spine fantasy knives.

Do you have some specific examples of smiling razors you like?

[–] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago) (1 children)

I agree about the fantasy/art pieces. Not for me. This kept me away for a long time.

As I was looking into Japanese razors, I came across the Kikuboshi R. Saito in that photo. Comments about how it shaves piqued my interest even though I wasn’t drawn to it aesthetically. These were “production” razors back in the day and because people are afraid to hone them, you can find some in very good shape.

The other very smiley razor I have is my Woolfblades, a custom. Though my razor is not one, he definitely makes dragon/fantasy razors.

The reason you want to try one of these is that they cut like a slant razor and the curvature naturally works with the curvy nature of the face and neck.

You "these are not the droids you're looking for"-ed me :)

This SK1 is going to make it's way to me now, looking forward to trying it!

[–] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 4 weeks ago

I know. Very weird looking. Just shave as you normally would and, of course, let me know what you think! 🤔

[–] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh, and if you happen to get the typical eBay "shave-ready" edge, here's a video on how to sharpen it.

[–] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Thanks! I'll definitely need to hone mine, it's explicitly sold as not shave ready.

[–] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Assuming that the geometry is squared away, and it most likely is, the Swedish steel used for that razor should take a great edge. Let me know how it goes.

[–] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I'll definitely let you know! I also have a WB FBU incoming, so it'll be two new smiling blades for me :)

[–] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 4 weeks ago

Fun times! I've been looking for the "right" W&B, Rodgers, or Greaves 8/8 FBU for a long while.

  • Razor: RazoRock Game Changer .68-P
  • Blade: Personna Lab Blue (7)
  • Lather: Chiseled Face - Ghost Town Barber - Soap
  • Post Shave: Zingari Man - The Master - Recovery Splash
  • Post Shave: Oleo & Co. - Facial Toner - Toner
  • Fragrance: GLHF Workshop - Atriox - EdT

Tub kill!

This was the first tub of soap I ever bought, and honestly I'm glad to see it go. I really enjoyed the scent, but it increasingly gave me a bit of light frag burn as time went on.

Have a great day!

[–] walden@wetshav.ing 4 points 1 month ago

Congratulations on the tub kill!!!!!!!

  • Brush: Wolf Whiskers - "Gianmaria" w/Maggard 26mm Synthetic
  • Razor: Joseph Rogers & Sons Near Wedge (1)
  • Lather: Zingari Man - The Stargazer - Soap
  • Post Shave: Zingari Man - The Stargazer - Aftershave Serum

Stargazer is a delicate scent. Combined with the soap being lightly scented, overall I'd say I didn't smell it much today!! There's something there, though, and I like it. In my experience with scents like this, my nose will learn what to look for in the future and it'll smell stronger as a result.

My only experience with ZM is with an older base. This base was intuitive and worked well.

I had high expectations for this fresh edge, but alas it just didn't feel the same as I once knew it. I've had shaves from this razor that made me crave it, but this was just average. I suppose I could hone it some more...

  • Brush: Zenith B44 28mm Boar
  • Razor: Gillette Fatboy E4 (setting: 6)
  • Blade: Gillette 7 O'Clock Super Stainless (Green) (5)
  • Lather: Chicago Grooming Company - Susurro - Soap
  • Toner: Thayers - Coconut - Toner
  • Aftershave: Barrister and Mann - Marilyn - Aftershave
  • Fragrance: Barrister and Mann - Marilyn - Eau de Toilette

2 passes. Bowl lather. Excellent shave.

I was not able to participate in BVWSC last month due to a mail system mix-up, but @snooting@sub.wetshaving.social was able to get Susurro to me. We have delayed BVWSC for this month until next week so this gives me a chance to catch up.

I am already familiar with the Darkwing base, and the lather was excellent. The spicy amber vibe that is given off by Susurro is right up my alley. I know this is a dupe of Replica Whispers in the Library, and I've never tried that, but Marilyn has a similar hushed, quiet feel to it as well. Very enjoyable shave today. I'm happy to have tried Susurro.
