Would have been a better headline!

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 93 points 1 month ago (2 children)

He's indoctrinating out youth with a satanic Muslim mysticism called Al-Gebra.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 29 points 1 month ago

in case some people don't know: algebra actually comes from the Arabic word "al-jabr".

[–] cassandrafatigue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Number one justification for islamophobia and sinophobia.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I legit never heard the word sinophobia and I thought it was a trigonometry joke.

I guess we need a joke that combines math and racism then.

It's the 0th cause of Indophobia?

Sorry, didn't mean to go off on a tangent.

Thy hips shall not speak falsehoods.

[–] thagoat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 46 points 1 month ago (4 children)

I, for one, enjoy Roman numerals.

[–] Derpenheim@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 month ago (5 children)

Oh yeah big guy? How many letters you need to write 3999?

[–] ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Isn't it MMMIM? Only one extra character

[–] Derpenheim@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

subtraction rule only allows a smaller numeral to be placed before a larger one if it is one of the following combinations: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, or CM. The numeral 'i' ((1)) can only be placed before a 'V' ((5)) or an 'X' ((10)).

[–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 14 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

That rule wasn't always hard and fast, just as IV or XL were sometimes written as IIII or XXXX respectively. The XVIII Legion was occasionally termed XIIX, which should have been right out, but it worked well enough to inscribe in stone on a memorial and use on official calendars.

The fundamental requirement was that People would look at it and understand what it is saying. There was no "Office of Numeral Oversight" correcting people. The norms that we may learn about are descriptive of the majority, but not strictly prescriptive for all the cases.

If it follows the basic additive/subtractive pattern, it's good enough.

If you want to be a prick, write IMMMM

[–] Whelks_chance@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Maybe the symmetry made people more likely to overlook the conventional way of writing things. Still no hard rule, but more leniency if it looks cool.

I hate that when i see memes like this all i can think is "its only a matter of time before stupid people share this with other stupid people unironically"

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It probably happened before you even saw the meme.

Fox News is gonna run a piece on how we must eliminate Arabic numerals from American society. Your family will be talking about this travesty at Thanksgiving.

A new Home maker class featuring falafel and hummus as side dishes is now mandatory to graduate High school.

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Fuck, I would have enjoyed that course.

[–] GorGor@startrek.website 5 points 1 month ago (5 children)

Homemade falafel and hummus is so much better than store bought and so easy. I just gotta perfect a pita recipe.

I don’t know man, something about his damn smile is so funny to me. It’s so smug, he’s always smiling like he just absolutely knows he’s making some very rich assholes panic and I love everything about it.

[–] whoisearth@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I highly doubt they're panicking. If they're even aware they're perturbed at best.

[–] Bababasti@feddit.org 5 points 1 month ago

Fair, panicking was probably a bit of a stretch there. But I like how they at least burn a bunch of money on his political opponents

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 month ago

This post came directly from Al Jazeer which references Al Gebra.

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I learned Arabic numerals in 1978 in preschool in Wyoming, and I never became a terrorist.

Never became a terrorist so far.

[–] Zagorath@aussie.zone 7 points 1 month ago

According to a study, almost III out of V of those polled opposed this.

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Well to be fair, the republicunts would prefer kids not learn any numbers because only stupid people vote for Cons...

[–] Zagorath@aussie.zone 4 points 1 month ago

TranscriptionA photo of Zohran Mamdani standing in front of an American flag. It is captioned:

Mamdani has announced his first policy: children in New York public schools will now be required to learn Arabic numerals

[–] prime_number_314159@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I support this wholeheartedly.

[–] P1k1e@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

ITS AN OUTRAGE I TELL YOU! MATH IS AMERICAN! INVENTED IN AMERICA!
