Fri 14 Nov 2025

  • Brush: Zenith 506B MB (27 mm Γ— 51 mm Manchurian badger)
  • Razor: Zwilling J. A. Henckels Friodur 17 (NOS, 7/8", hollow ground, stainless steel)
  • Lather: Catie's Bubbles – Connecticut Shade
  • Post Shave: Chiseled Face – GemΓΌtlichkeit
  • Fragrance: House of Mammoth – Tobacconist

Yesterday's combo left me wanting to play with more tobacco combos. This time I started with warm, sweet pipe tobacco with vanilla and nutmeg, took it in a fully gourmand direction with oatmeal cookies and coffee, and finished it up with the warm, dry scent of a cigar shop. It worked!

Connecticut Shade is so good

[–] snooting@wetshav.ing 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Chris is doing a release of Porch Drinks in the premium base soon, in case you haven't heard.

It would fit in very nicely with what you chose for today.

Ooh, I haven't heard, and I'm going to jump on it, thanks!

[–] pi_dash_rho@wetshav.ing 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Those are some great picks!

Yup, it's really working well together!

Terrific setup. I intended to buy Connecticut Shade at the Maggard Meetup but I think I was pretty nose-blind by the time I gave it a sniff.

[–] djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You'll just have to go there again next year πŸ™‚

[–] gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I am planning to go again in April. Perhaps I’ll treat it more like the Maggard Buyup next time. πŸ˜‰

I know I would :)

November 14th, 2025

  • Brush: Stirling Soap Co. 24mm Synthetic
  • Razor: Gillette Atra - Handle
  • Blade: Personna Twin Pivot Plus (Atra) Cart (9)
  • Lather: Spearhead Shaving Company - Seaforth! Leather - Soap
  • Post Shave: Brut - Brut - Splash On
  • Post Shave: Goodfellow & Co. - Kelp & Sea Mineral - Lotion

Last time I used this blade (cart) I thought maybe it was time to replace it, but this shave felt great. Go figure! The lather was great, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Spearhead base is fantastic and will be missed.

I tried using the new Wet Shaving Database SOTD generator because it's really really nice, but I miss a couple features from my clunky SDS page -- namely tracking blade count and automatic posting to PieFed.

[–] DaveWave94@wetshav.ing 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Those 2-blade Personna cartridges are, if cartridges need to be used, the best available option IMHO together with single-blade disposable BIC razors.

That SOTD generator looks really cool, but if you miss some features from your database maybe you could create your own SOTD post generator? Granted, I don't know how much work this would involve. A lot of effort, I imagine. But I would definitely give it a try too if you ever decide to do so and need testers πŸ‘πŸ»

[–] walden@wetshav.ing 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I do have a SOTD generator that is hooked up to the Shaving Data System. It's quite functional, but the one ShavingInCT made is much better looking and less "weird".

I'm sure I could get his source code and try to add the features that I want. A project for another day!

A project for another day!

Best of luck with it & let us know when it's done πŸ‘πŸ»

  • Brush: AP Shave Co. Blue & Clear - Gelousy (A3) 28mm Badger
  • Razor: Ever-Ready Streamline
  • Blade: Accuforge GEM Microcoat (10)
  • Lather: Talent Soap Factory - 2nd Wind - Soap
  • Post Shave: Spearhead Shaving Company - Seaforth! 3 Scots - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Oleo & Co. - Facial Toner - Toner
  • Fragrance: Barrister and Mann - Ubrique - EdP

Busy day today so far!

I'm still not super impressed by this duck tallow base. It gave a good shave and lathered easily, but doesn't seem to have significantly better performance than the vegan TSF base(s).

  • Brush: Zenith B44 28mm Boar
  • Razor: Geneva Cutlery Co. Heavy 6/8 Hollow Ground Square Point
  • Razor: Geneva Cutlery Co. Henry's X 6/8" Hollow Ground Square Point
  • Lather: Noble Otter - Firefighter - Soap
  • Toner: Thayers - Coconut - Toner
  • Aftershave: Noble Otter - Firefighter - Aftershave

3 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

This was a test shave for edges from two Vermont slate stones; a mottled grey stone and a purple stone. The two Geneva Cutlery razors had the same geometry and steel and tested at the same level of keenness when they were sharpened. I found that the two edges were very similar, with the edge from the mottled grey stone having comfort similar to a Thuringian edge, while the one from the purple stone had more of an Arkansas edge feel to it.

The mottled grey stone takes a little more effort while sharpening because it is porous and requires hydration maintenance. The purple stone, like most razor finishers, is just splash-n-go.

Thuringian edge

Feels kinda surreal that my small little german state has a sharpening stone/edge named after it. Really cool though!

[–] gcgallant@wetshav.ing 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not only that, these are famous stones for having exceptional quality!

[–] DaveWave94@wetshav.ing 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I read an interesting blog post after a short research: the Escher stones originally came from the area near Sonneberg, a southern thuringian city famous for developing and manufacturing all kinds of children's toys. The sharpening stones themselves are rather rare and therefore expensive. Something new to me, but nevertheless quite interesting!

[–] gcgallant@wetshav.ing 2 points 1 month ago

The Escher company went out of business. To my knowledge, the Thuringian mountain ranges are not mined for stones any more, but material from those mountains is used to make some synthetic whetstones. (I’ve never seen these). The original stones are very desirable.

Nov 14, 2025 - Fougere Friday

  • Brush: Chisel & Hound FougΓ¨re 26mm v16 Fanchurian Badger Knot
  • Razor: Aylsworth Razors Drakkant Ti
  • Blade: Gillette 7'OC-SS
  • Lather: Chicago Grooming Co. - AG 1889
  • Post Shave: Chicago Grooming Co. - AG 1889

The lather fell apart on me during my second pass. It became nothing more than a thin slurry. It was enough to finish the job, but I probably should have taken the extra time to reload the brush before the second pass. Still a close shave, with only one small nick.
