What V for Vendetta needs is a shameless capitalist cash grab to really seal its supremacy. All hail the mighty dollar!!!

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 3 points 4 months ago (2 children)

They already did that when they sold the masks to dopey internet people.

[–] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Isn't that because it was popularized by Anonymous?

[–] chemicalprophet@slrpnk.net 1 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Did the masks not exist prior?

[–] chemicalprophet@slrpnk.net 2 points 4 months ago

According to the Wikipedia they existed long before.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 2 points 4 months ago

That particular design is Warner Bros. film merchandise.

[–] SereneSadie@lemmy.myserv.one 44 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I do not trust WB in the slightest to do a story about fighting fascism when they've bent over for it repeatedly.

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 4 months ago

The fascists are going to be woke-coded

"V for Vendetta: the Prequel" In this blockbuster miniseries we follow Guy Fawkes and the motley crew of the Gunpowder Plot as they plan their explosive demonstration of love for Catholic monarchy.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 4 months ago

Includes a steamy romantic subplot where Guy Fawkes falls in love with a Cardinal.

My kneejerk reaction is "Why? It's been done!" but the Watchmen HBO show was totally different and was quite good.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Yeah. The live-action series was amazing but the animated movies just retreaded the live-action movie.

Will it be a retelling of the movie, or an extended universe story?

"Why create new things when we can endlessly recycle old shit."

How can we piss off Alan Moore?

I know!

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 15 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Sure, but just by mentioning his name he's probably pissed off. He's written some AMAZING stories, but he's grumpy at everything.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

He's also written some deeply fucked up shit...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illuminations_(short_story_collection)

Maybe it got better after the story where the 5 year old is sold into sex slavery and has a hemispherectomy to make her more compliant, but I won't know...

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 4 points 4 months ago

That's fair. Maybe even story wise that's a great story, but I agree I don't think I want to know. But I'm not looking to call out the stories I don't find amazing.

It's fiction. As you described it, it may, horrible as it is, be based on truth. I don't know and I don't want to know.

I'm not here to champion all of his work. I just know that he's written some excellent stories and I choose to believe those stories are fictional.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 4 months ago

The wifi password is I underscore hate underscore Alan fifty-eight and it's all lower-case.

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Alan Moore is such a grumpy old fuck but I feel like at this point they just enjoy poking the man.

I say this as someone who’s loved Alan Moore since I was a teen.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago (2 children)

He kinda went off the rails over the whole "Before Watchmen" stuff. Basically saying DC has been riding his coat tails for years and shouldn't be using "his" characters.

And I'm like...

First off, the Watchmen characters are 2nd and 3rd generation knock offs of the Charlton characters he was told he couldn't use.

Second, nobody else should play with "your" characters?

I guess we better let Mick Anglo (Marvelman) know. Ditto Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson (Swamp Thing), or all the other public domain creators he failed to credit for the America's Best stuff. I'm sure L. Frank Baum, J. M. Barrie and Lewis Carroll will be thrilled at the porn take on their characters.

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

He did a porn take on Lewis Carroll characters?

But yeah dude is unhinged so say the least.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Lost Girls. Alice, Dorothy, and Wendy swapping sex stories while snowed in at a hotel.

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 2 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Wow. That synopsis seems problematic. Why do some artists insist on injecting child sexuality themes into their art? Garth Nix, Stephen King, Alan Moore, tons of rockstars (although we know why with those guys), can it really just be that they’re all secretly pedophiles and just super bad at hiding it?

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Oh I know they were. Lewis Carroll was almost certainly a pedophile himself wasn’t he?

Like that doesn’t make this okay thought.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Carroll and Barrie both had problematic relationships with children.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

What's hilarious is that the critics were trying to dance around it calling it "Art" and "Literature" and Moore was adamant: "No, it's porn."

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 2 points 4 months ago

Yeah I saw that. Hilarious. Whatever you tell them it is they will say it’s the opposites. Art critic is a bullshit job.

[–] SaraTonin@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

IIRC, he had an informal deal with DC where they’d let the books go out of print and the copyright revert to him. So every adaptation is kind of like the 90s Roger Corman Fantastic 4, where a big part of the reason for it existing is so that the studio can keep the copyright.

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 17 points 4 months ago

They should base it in the US in the dystopian future year uh... 2025.

[–] DearMoogle@lemmy.today 13 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

I’m excited cuz if it’s good then I’ll be pleasantly surprised and it’ll be a great time watching. If it’s bad then oh well, I’ll pretend it doesn’t exist. There’s so much schlock out there that I’m desensitized to it all and won’t get my panties in a bunch lol.

Also it’s paramount to find the right person to play V!!😱

[–] Old_Jimmy_Twodicks@sh.itjust.works 11 points 4 months ago (3 children)

Assuming that V features in it, I agree that that casting choice will probably be make-or-break. So do you think they'll go with Chris Pratt or Timothée Chalamet?

[–] Thassodar@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Obviously RDJ Or Pedro Pascal, where you been?

[–] LordMayor@piefed.social 2 points 4 months ago

Excuse me? Jack Black is right there.

[–] DearMoogle@lemmy.today 5 points 4 months ago

Oh god. I have hopes that they’ll come up with someone better seeing as it’s HBO and not Netflix😂

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago (1 children)

And Charlie Day as the whacky new sidekick character.

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 11 points 4 months ago
[–] cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone 11 points 4 months ago

i shall pirate it then as intended

[–] Kyle_The_G@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago

I saw a gamertag "guy with no fawkes" and I think about that a lot.

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 8 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] Skavau@piefed.social 6 points 4 months ago

To be fair, HBO is a better fit for this than Netflix or Amazon would be.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I believe the plan is to just film reality. Pretty much lines up with the plot.

[–] viking 4 points 4 months ago

Fingers crossed the ending is in line with the movie then.

[–] I_am_10_squirrels@beehaw.org 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

And it will be nothing like the source material?

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 2 points 4 months ago

Just like the film. Sorry, movie.

[–] TheUnicornOfPerfidy@feddit.uk 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I know its unlikely, but what if its just the plot from the comic done well? Anti fascist as fuck and a good time for no one. I think we could do with that atm.

[–] LePoisson@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

The comic really is better than the movie. I want to see the real V depicted in the show, would be excellent. He's truly a psychopath in the comic, a rather irredeemable one at that. Would be great to see the comic plot done well vs the white washing that made V into a hero in the movie. He's very far from a hero, I don't even know if he fits the antihero role either, mostly in the comic he's just a deranged man that's been destroyed by society, has a boatload of bloodlust and seeks revenge through some rather dubious means (and innocent lives be damned).
