There's an old story about Churchill, FDR, and Stalin debating what to do with German officers after the war. Stalin comes in declaring 50,000 of them be summarily executed. FDR waves him off, insisting we couldn't execute more than 10,000. Churchill storms out in disgust.
I've heard people tell this story from two angles. One, to denounce Stalin as a bloodthirsty monster. Another to bemoan the tepid and lukewarm reaction that gave birth to three more generations of Nazism.

If every place that tried communism ended up with killing a large percentage of their own population then it does not matter if it's in the doctrine or not.
