Zwerner's attorneys said Parker failed to act in the hours before the shooting after several school staff members told her that the student had a gun in his backpack.

You have to be fucking kidding me. Several people knew there was a 6-yo wandering around with a gun and they felt they had to kick it up the chain to get a response?!

Yup. It seems crazy to people from other countries, but that's just a thing that happens in the US

Lots of unsecured firearms and curious children

I'm a lefty gun nut and secure storage is my only idea that will help and get past the courts. Won't make a huge dent in overall gun deaths, but shit like this is inexcusable. Parents deserve prison time for these events. And I say that as a parent to two young ones who could find myself in front of a jury if I fuck up. Gun safety does not make allowances for "oops".

Well, it was "bring your gun to school" day.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's everyday in a shithole country.

... Yes, and

Someone should have goosled that kid and shook him by the ankles till the gun fell out.

He was searched earlier by the victim and the gun wasn't found. If there's a rumor that a 6 y/o has a gun, yes, telling the principal seems like an obvious step somewhere in there. One would expect her to take the possibility seriously.

Now I'm really lost. As I understand it, kids can't have personal lockers anymore. So where does a 6-yo hide a gun? And then get to it later? From what I've seen with my stepson, and now my own little kids, they're marched around like prisoners, watched every second. Can you tell me more?

"Finally! I can afford craft supplies!"

Watch the video, scary shit. Poor woman laying there bleeding and trying to keep cool while paramedics work on her. What a fucked up thing for a kids teacher to deal with

The suit was against the assistant principal of the school. I doubt the assistant principal will be capable of paying $10m, so the teacher likely won't see any of the money. Especially if the assistant principal ends up in prison after the criminal trial.

Insurance is more likely.

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 3 points 1 month ago

Y'all aren't insured??

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

You’d think you would sue the school district or something?

[–] liebach@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 month ago

Yes, that's exactly how I read it too.

[–] Test_Tickles@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The really fucked up part is that a 6 year old shot his teacher and I never even fucking heard about it. School shootings have become so commonplace here that the only thing that made this "newsworthy" was the $10 million.

[–] Veedem@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It was a big deal when it happened. Much of my family works in public education so there was definitely a big conversation about the administration’s lack of action.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 8 points 1 month ago

The problem should be "how a kid got a gun and then decided to use it on a person?"

[–] Stegget@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

This was widely reported when it happened two years ago.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 9 points 1 month ago

This is fucked up on so many levels I lost count.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

I've got a gun and two kids. We can split the profits. DM me.

[–] stinky@redlemmy.com 2 points 1 month ago

you think teachers are in it for the money?

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

Obviously the only thing that could've saved this situation from happening was a good ~~guy~~6 year old kid with a gun. It's all about getting a good balance.
