I don't really disagree, but at the same time, some of the things mentioned in this article have other explanations than just people being narcissistic.

It talks about people finding it more important to be well off financially and more focused on stuff like loneliness and unemployment as opposed to global issues. Well, everything has become absurdly expensive, and it's become increasingly difficult to meet people naturally (COVID really did not help here). It's often difficult for people to make ends meet, and people are getting laid off left and right. With these sorts of local issues, focusing on global ones is understandably difficult.

Additionally, it's focused on young people, but I think the narcissism is just as prevalent (if not moreso) in older generations. Perhaps when they were young themselves they were less selfish and self-absorbed, but it definitely doesn't seem that way now.

It's a weird article. It starts with the scientific data, summarized: NPI (Narcissistic Personality Index) scores have been increasing dramatically in the past 20 years. That is particularly true for younger people, who both have higher absolute scores and a higher increase. (That's the data, but the article doesn't mention it in detail.)

Then it goes on a series of wild speculations about why the scores are increasing, which is the stuff you mention. There is no data backing that up, but somehow the scientists themselves (who should know better) are quoted as providing part of the "explanations." I think the technical term for those is WGPOYA, Wild Guesses Pulled Out of Your Ass.

lol imagine typing this in a world where boomers exist.

someone says one group is something you can shake your head about that one group compared to yours!

At least I'm not as narcissistic as my boomer parents that think they have freedom from consequences for their bad behavior. I do the bare minimum of treating myself and feel like I'm a monster for indulging in smoking weed and/or having a drink. I'm never gonna own a house and I don't have any friends, despite actually trying to connect with people irl. I go to parties and bars and idk if I'm suppose to walk up to cute guys and ask them their numbers. I feel like my experience is stunted from the pandemic and my self esteem is shot. If thats narcissistic then call me a narcissist

Well , to be fair, it was all about you...

I'm gonna press X to doubt. Fuck knows that the world is filled with dumbshits, many of whom can be found categorizing themselves in the "online influencer" category, but I have to feel like real life for the average zillennial or whatever has to be at least marginally humbling. Hard to feel like you're hot shit when you either live at home or wage slave three side hustles to afford your one bedroom apartment.

Honestly? Why not? Its not like society gives a shit about me or if I can eat this week.

sometimes it's nice to indulge in placing myself first

Hey as a reminder, the definition/understanding most people have about the term "narcissistic" is different than whatever one this study is used. Psychology is "hard" and nearly all of it is skewed to white people from the mid to late 20th century.

IRL I'd be willing to bet like $20 that people who are more "accepting" of themselves or who listen to their emotions more rank as more narcissistic.

A better headline would be "young people score more points on an exam that supposedly (not proven to) estimate narcissistic behaviour in people"

Edit: fixed some misplaced words

Class war only pls. The wealthy are the narcissists selfishly driving the planet down the drain. Broke genZ kids aren't the problem.

[–] Aggravationstation@feddit.uk 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

True, but part of the way they're being controlled is by being made to worry about themselves rather than how badly they're being fucked by the oligarchs.

[–] SaneMartigan@aussie.zone 3 points 3 days ago

That started when WW2 war propaganda turned to corporate America to increase individualism to sell people shit. See Century of the Self. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0432232/
