Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Time is a social construct. People living under capitalist regimes are sensitive about having their time wasted because they need to sell their time in order to survive.

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Idk I feel like time is also valuable when you starve to death if you don't go hunting and gathering often enough...

[–] Best_Jeanist@discuss.online 2 points 1 hour ago

You gather when you're hungry. Hunger is as good a measure as time.

I'd much rather people be late than early. That shit drives me crazy.

I had a mate who was consistently 15 mins - 3 hours late to everything. It's rude to do that to your friends.

[–] 7U5K3N@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I have a friend that's that way .. her boyfriend at the time made her tell us why she's always late for everything.

Because I hate to wait on people

Like bitch you're making us wait Everytime we hang out.... GTFO of here with that shit.

Since then, We don't hang out as much . And we now plan to be a bit late for everything with her.

My wife and I have a toddler so that helps. Haha

[–] rayquetzalcoatl@lemmy.world 6 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

She hates to wait on people so refuses to turn up on time, making everybody else wait on her? Jesus, what a nightmare. Does she think she's the queen of england or something? 😂

Man for real. We love her. But we had to start telling her to be places upwards of an hour before she should be there.

She's one of those folks that would be like... "We are in the car" while she's still sitting at home doing her hair.

God damned annoying.

Nah, unemployed for a good chunk of time. Turns out, turning up consistently late to every job you have and constantly missing full days isn't a great plan.

Sounds like a genuine mental health issue TBH.

[–] rayquetzalcoatl@lemmy.world 0 points 54 minutes ago (1 children)

Yeah it certainly sounds like that, but the guy was massively lazy so could just be that 🤷‍♂️

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 1 points 46 minutes ago

That still sounds like a massive mental health issue.

Being on time is about respecting other peoples time, not about obeying anything.

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 30 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (2 children)

I'm a hyperpunctual person who had to learn to appreciate that just because some people have difficulty meeting a schedule it doesn't necessarily mean they don't respect me. Some people have a lot going on, even if just figuratively speaking.

Helped me to realize that even I'm not showing up on time out of a respect for other people, I just fear consequences. Ironically it really is dictatorship of the clocks for me.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 4 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

This. When I'm late, it's generally because of my health issues. If I can, I try to set meeting times so that I have at least a chance of making it on time, but my issues make planning rather difficult.

[–] Nomad 10 points 7 hours ago

Interesting. I always see it as "I chose to be there at the specific time, the clock helps us both respect the others time better". Its a coordination device. Early in life we don't choose the time usually, like school and job etc. So might come with a flavor of tyranny. Interesting

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today -2 points 9 hours ago

Maybe it's a "late to the party" kind of thing.

[–] Una@europe.pub 5 points 6 hours ago

I am never late, I am always on time (or early), other people are too early

[–] semisimian@startrek.website 15 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

I don't remember this quote, so I went digging and I can't find this in the show. Anyone have a link?

[–] trashcroissant@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 7 hours ago

Def not in the show. Doubt the person who made the meme has ever even seen the show tbh

[–] lugal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Sir, this is a meme community

[–] NoForwardslashS@sopuli.xyz 11 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

All memes now require thorough citations

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 6 hours ago

"Hyperlinks, please."
