THE POLICE PROBLEM

3983 readers
1211 users here now

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

RULES

Real-life decorum is expected. Please don't say things only a child or a jackass would say in person.

If you're here to support the police, you're trolling. Please exercise your right to remain silent.

Saying ~~cops~~ ANYONE should be killed lowers the IQ in any conversation. They're about killing people; we're not.

Please don't dox or post calls for harassment, vigilantism, tar & feather attacks, etc.

Please also abide by the instance rules.

It you've been banned but don't know why, check the moderator's log. If you feel you didn't deserve it, hey, I'm new at this and maybe you're right. Send a cordial PM, for a second chance.

It is fucking wild we've all lived long enough to see the POLICE start to speak out against authoritarianism.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 21 points 20 hours ago

"They're ruining it for us!"

[–] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 22 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

They need to be locked up with multi-decade long sentences.

[–] tastetheplague@sh.itjust.works 3 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I think a more permanent solution would be far more preferable.

[–] tatterdemalion@programming.dev 29 points 20 hours ago

Your average ICE officer has the mind of a 3rd grade bully with a racist dad.

Right now the source is hosted under v.reddit.it. is there a mirror we can link to or use?

Reddit being reddit can quickly get rid of that video. And removing that dependency would be so nice.

I fund uploading video to Mastodon to work really well because you can easily share it right on Mastodon.

Catbox.moe is great though

[–] CubitOom 8 points 19 hours ago

I don't like or trust reddit either. I post videos like this as I find them to the Fediverse as soon as I can.

I found it at that URL in the source, however I posted the video to Mastodon. For this post, the video link is coming from the Mastodon post.

I only include the place where I found it just incase it can help give some context to others.

I'm not sure about where to post it, but I did download it...

I just hope there is some level of accountability once we emerge from this fascist regime.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 17 points 21 hours ago

Death to every Nazi. They know exactly what they are doing.

[–] Marshezezz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 21 hours ago

We all have to make sure there is

[–] Cyberflunk@lemmy.world 47 points 1 day ago (1 children)

i hope i live long enough to see these fucks lined up against A wall by fellow citizens, and taught a very short lesson in antifa justice

[–] ButtermilkBiscuit@feddit.nl 4 points 19 hours ago

It's a shame we would only make an example of these dimwits who fail aptitude tests at alarming rates. If they could read they would know the Nuremberg trails weren't kind of brown shirts who were just following orders. I only hope we reserve the same treatment for the people running the show.

[–] LordCrom@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago

The giy was just standing there and they sucker punched him from the back. Wtf

As someone who lives near Portland, the fact that Portland police even testified about excessive force means it's bad.

[–] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 11 points 20 hours ago

Seriously, the whole reason the right is obsessed with Portland now is that the Portland police used incredible levels of excessive force to put down BLM protests. And since they believe the police are always in the right, then Portland must be a hellhole. I used to live in one of the smaller towns in Oregon and mentioning that I went up to Portland for a day would typically result in someone telling me I was lucky I wasn't shot. Never mind that the PPB is so brutal that the federal government sued them for excessive force back in 2012. To unfortunately minimal effect. That you can be too brutal for Portland police is just insane.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 56 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I mean, they clearly just tackle a guy from behind out of nowhere. A guy who's minding his own businesses and just standing there in the least threatening manner possible.

Also very revealing that they specifically target the guy wearing hippie-looking clothes, most likely because they associate that with left wing ideology and their remit is to remove "undesirables" regardless of whether or not they're a threat to anyone.

So yeah, this is so blatant that it's frankly not surprising that even the fascist PPD consider it beyond the pale/giving away the game.

[–] Digestive_Biscuit@feddit.uk 3 points 19 hours ago

I'm curious to know what he's holding, and tried to retrieve. Looks a bit like a speaker or something. I wonder if that played a part in this. I'm not saying it's justified in anyway, just curious to know what it is.

[–] NABDad@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

They'd lose their minds at Becky's Drive-in. During the labor day movie marathon, they sell tie-dyed t-shirts. Tons of people are wearing them. They wouldn't be able to figure out whose rights to violate first.

I'm kidding of course. They'd be outnumbered, so they'd just run away.

The fact that Chicago is resisting when they have their own police black sites should tell you how fucking horrific these guys are planning to get

And if the masked guy did it, then everyone wearing a mask is guilty right?

[–] Hozerkiller@lemmy.ca 7 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Only the protesters with masks on actually.

[–] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

[serious question]

What is the government suggesting is the justification for this particular abuse of power?

I know it's bullshit. I'm just curious what bullshit they're using for this.

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The government wants to squeeze and provoke violent acts so they can squeeze more.

[–] NABDad@lemmy.world 7 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I don't think that's going to be the justification they use in court.

[–] Dionysus@leminal.space 6 points 21 hours ago

If it's the current SCOTUS he can use his South Park quote, "Hey guy! I'm Trump!". And be released.

[–] s38b35M5@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago

I'll take a whack at it: "Officer safety."

All of fuck sticks in uniform deserve a year's jail time at a minimum. Assaulting peaceful protesters? Fuck that.

[–] Decq@lemmy.world 104 points 1 day ago

They are traitors to the people/country. Basically the 'domestic terrorists' they keep talking about. They deserve way more than 1 year.
