TL;DR

  • Google Maps appears to be working on a new power saving mode for navigation.
  • The mode would eliminate almost all UI elements and extraneous map labeling from your view.
  • Power saving mode limitations could prevent it from working in landscape or with public transit

Isn't that just for the latest feature where the last active app can draw on the always on display?

would be cool if its actually well optimized and run well on my shitty phone, and not just a mostly black minimal ui for amoled.

we have this already. Its called CoMaps.

I don't think comaps is design for extremely low power usage. It is good for battery but it still requires compute to run.

I've used CoMaps for a month now but I am still struggling. It seems to give a slower route almost everytime I have to end up in a Wohngebiet. All Autobahn and high routes are no problem, but if I want to go a smaller street somewhere it just sends me the weirdest routes. On Halloween it had me run in circles, I was so confused and the kids had a good laugh. But because of that I'm considering going back to google maps 😭

It has been getting better every release. I moved to it from Organic maps mostly because the community is much healthier and development is faster.

Try OsmAnd, I don't have any problems with it for so many years. It's heavier than CoMaps but also so much more powerful

Sorry to hear, at least your kids had a good time!
