House Republicans are exploring ways to prevent Zohran Mamdani from ever being sworn in as mayor even if he prevails in Tuesday’s election by using the Constitution’s “insurrection clause,” The Post has learned.

The New York Young Republican Club is pushing to prevent the NYC mayoral frontrunner from taking the oath of office Jan. 1 under an idea floated this summer.

It cites language in the post-Civil War 14th Amendment to the Constitution barring from office anyone who “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” or who has “given aid or comfort to the enemies.” The group argues that Mamdani’s own statements calling to resist ICE could violate the prohibition.

It’s the same provision Colorado used to try to kick Trump off the ballot last year, only to get slapped down by the Supreme Court. The high court ruled that it was up to Congress to enforcement the amendment, giving majority Republicans a chance to test their authority.

Can’t win any way except to cheat.

[–] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 4 points 9 hours ago

As it has been prophesized for decades. Once the Republicans can no longer legally win they will cheat and steal to keep power. The constitution is only something to cudgel Democrats with, not something to honour.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 6 points 10 hours ago

More fascism.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 45 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Republicans explore everything other than actually fucking helping their constituents.

[–] Poem_for_your_sprog@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Why would they? It's proven they can shit all over their voters and they'll sit there and guzzle it down with their mouths agape in awe at their divine leaders.

[–] reddifuge@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

MAGAts are a new breed of fucking moron cultist.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 9 points 15 hours ago

And the first thing they always seem to try is cheating.

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 15 points 16 hours ago

Just like they are preventing the rep from Arizona? This is fucking INSANE!

[–] Quexotic 50 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

And this is how they provoke an actual insurrection. Stay froggy, friends.

[–] reddifuge@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

I wouldn't recommend a frog suit. It's hard to aim

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 17 points 20 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Quexotic 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (1 children)

Yeah that's why I mentioned it because not everybody is aware that that's exactly what they're trying to do. They're trying to start a war so that they can be seen by their supporters as being justified and using force against their enemies.

And to be clear what I mean by staying froggy, what I mean is to protest like the Portland frog does. Peacefully, cleverly, and without getting hurt or hurting someone else.

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Quexotic 2 points 9 hours ago

This is the way!

[–] AlexLost@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

Traitorous US government trying to figure out ways to screw American citizens and voters even harder. Fixed it for you. The USA has never been about 1 guy and should never be about 1 guy. That's how you become Russia. How's that going for them?

[–] MangioneDontMiss@feddit.nl 8 points 16 hours ago

How to get ahead in politics: Be a genuinely decent human being.

If only all of the other scumbags in politics didn't make it so hard.

[–] MourningDove@lemmy.zip 37 points 21 hours ago

So, they’re openly and brazenly ass-fucking the constitution right in our faces, knowing full-well that there isn’t anyone, or anything to stop them.

America is a possession now. Owned and operated by terrorists, for terrorists.

[–] Bennyboybumberchums@lemmy.world 15 points 19 hours ago

No taxation without representation. If they dont honour the results, then you have no representation. And if you have no representation, then fuck them. They can sing for there taxes. The machine only works when you all play along. Stop playing. See how quickly anyone is willing to come to your door, when they arent getting paid to do so.

The power of people is only real power, when you all hold fast together. Let them threaten you. Let them jail you. Cos them money. And give them nothing until elections are fair and just.

[–] Tiger666@lemmy.ca 34 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

So the republicans are truly anti-democratic and this proves it. Fuxk fascists.

[–] spaghettiwestern@sh.itjust.works 7 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

We have a tyrannical minority that is actively changing laws so they can remain in power indefinitely. We have a packed Supreme Court that is literally ignoring the Constitution when the reason they exist is to protect it. If they hadn't made Trump king he would not be in office, he'd be in criminal court.

Republicans have been virulently anti-democracy for decades. As far as the GQP is concerned the majority can go fuck themselves.

"If conservatives become convinced that they can not win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy.” - David Frum

Always have been.

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 17 points 20 hours ago

New York Post is absolute GARBAGE. Right-wing tabloid owned by Murdoch. Only place that would publish the hunter laptop conspiracy theory.

[–] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 19 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

New York Young Republican Club is being shut down because they are literally Nazis.

They aren't going to do a fucking thing.

[–] spaghettiwestern@sh.itjust.works 4 points 18 hours ago

So.. Just like most of Maga, right?

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 21 points 22 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Routhinator@startrek.website 6 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

With this administration you need to move that red line up a couple of shades.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 6 points 21 hours ago

RFK is in danger of dropping below it as it is.

I still can’t believe the whole country is seething about an NYC mayor election lmaoo.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 10 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

On the other side of the ocean, plenty of people not even living on the same continent are cheering for Mamdani. Not because the mayor of NYC affects us directly, but because 1) he's awesome and 2) if change starts with this mayoral election, tide may yet turn for the US as a whole. And of course 3) NYC is overly romanticized thanks to the American media my generation grew up on here in post-soviet Eastern Europe, plus it is awesome to visit. Maybe with Mamdani it can be awesome to live in again as well.

[–] aceshigh@lemmy.world 8 points 19 hours ago

Yes. I also see Mamdani as hope for the us. That’s why billionaires are against him. That’s why the current admin is against him. He will inspire other young people to get involved with politics.

I think that ICE will be sent to murder Zohran, if he doesn't have a large enough bodyguard detail.

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 209 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Fact that they’re so scared of him tells me he’s doing something right.

[–] seitzer@piefed.social 56 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And both parties are scared. That is even more revealing.

[–] AngularViscosity@piefed.social 14 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago) (4 children)

This is the part I don't (figuratively) understand about US politics. Mamdani embodies what the US left has wanted all along but he's being pictured as worse than MAGAt by Democrats.

Democrats are fighting him just as bad as Republicans and are resisting him more than they resist the traitors in office. It's bonkers.

[–] hanrahan@piefed.social 23 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Democrats are centre right, Republicans are insane. Once you undertanad that, it all makes sense.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 5 points 17 hours ago

This is a good summary of the us parties this millenium.

[–] harmbugler@piefed.social 27 points 22 hours ago (1 children)
[–] tinned_tomatoes@feddit.uk 7 points 16 hours ago

Yup. The US is what happens when you let billionaires run the whole country. Mamdani is a threat to that dynamic.

[–] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 9 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

That's because you mistakenly believe that the Democrats are "the left".

It becomes clearer when you realize that, in terms of political power, the left is a tiny insergency within the Democratic party. The party establishment itself is pretty solidly to the right.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 7 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

It did not work for their glorious leader on Jan 6, why would it work now?

[–] SaraTonin@lemmy.world 12 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

It’s not about what the law actually means, it’s about who is wielding the power

American patriots exploring ways to prevent ALL Republican politicians from ever breathing free air again. The tides will turn and when they do......

[–] Tinidril@midwest.social 6 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I hope that includes the Republican Democrats because there sure seem to be a lot of them.
