About this community and how I post the comics… Many moons ago, I would ask my Dad to save the newspaper for me everyday so I could read my favorite comic strips. Of course these days you can read your favorite comics online instead of a newspaper, but I love the nostalgia of reading the daily comics. Anyway, one of my favorite current comics is Cyanide and Happiness and I will be posting the daily release from their website (https://explosm.net/) and a an extra or two randoms.

I often think about what Mirri Maz Duur tells Daenerys in (A) Game of Thrones regarding Drogo, now in a vegetative state:

Mirri Maz Duur: So, tell me exactly what it was that you saved?
Daenerys Targaryen: Your life.
Mirri Maz Duur: Why don't you take a look at your husband? Then you will see exactly what life is worth when all the rest is gone.

Life is important, but it's more than just a heartbeat...

I mean, his legs aren't looking optimally functional. They look like they've been bent in directions they shouldn't've been. I mean they could probably heal, but I assume there's a lot of pain involved. And the breathing tube is presumably also temporary, but gets old quickly.

Also, C&H is based in the USA right? So presumably there's still the crippling debt from medical care. Plus potential trauma from the events leading to his current state.

But yes I agree, they definitely could've made it more obvious that he's in a state where he would not want to remain alive. Though the line for that is subjective.

I don't get it.

Is the implication here that the patient is in some kind of horrible, painful condition such as a locked in syndrome or similar, and would rather be dead, which is why the well wishing from the relatives is painful to him?

I even checked their website if this one's missing some other comic for context that needs to be read with this one, but that doesn't seem to be the case either. Don't get it.

I’ll take a stab at this. The guy has clearly been grievously injured to the point where he’s “lucky to be alive”. The dude is lying there with a breathing tube, probably in horrible pain and everyone around him is saying how “lucky” he is. He probably doesn’t feel very lucky! ;)

That comic doesn't communicate that well, to the point where I thought that would have been the message but still checked the website because I thought that couldn't be it. The eyes aren't drawn in a way that would imply blindness. He won't be able to "talk for a while", implying that'll be fine again. He has all his limbs. Breathing tube, yeah, but that alone really doesn't illustrate injuries to the degree of wanting to be dead - I've seen people with similar devices that essentially help them sleep.

If your explanation is correct, the comic doesn't really do its job of communicating it, so any other explanation would be just as likely.

I agree there’s nothing there indicating that he wants to be dead. It’s just people keep telling him he’s lucky. If he was really lucky he wouldn’t be hurt at all.
