MODERATORS
The biggest impediment at this point is anti-cheat. Can’t play many AAA games because of that. That said, I primarily game on Linux and only have a small windows partition to play such games.
Personally any game that requires a rootkit in order to play is not a game I'm interested in, from either a gameplay or a security point of view.
I wouldn't know from a gameplay point of view because it's not worth finding out. There are plenty of good games
Is there any data what percent of steam users are playing multiplayer games with anti cheat? Just curious.
I ditched windows over a year ago and couldn't be happier. I dont play multiplayer games, apart from the occasional co-op, but there are no issues whatsoever.
It's only gonna keep going upwards as long as new hardware like the Steam Deck comes along, I wager. I am for sure going to buy the next Steam Controller when it hits, but then again, I already am a 100% Linux gamer.
Just installed Bazzite. 10700KF, RTX3070, 32gb.
Helldivers2, Overwatch2, Baulders Gate3, Hollow knight, Master of magic (DOS), Lego LOTR and even Borderlands 3 on Epic (via Heroic) all work with zero tweaking.
I was getting 90fps in Borderlands 3.
The only issue I've had was my cheap controller didn't work in LegoLOTR but my official wireless Xbox one was fine.
This doesn't even include October right? I suspect we will see a non-zero spike there too
I think that gamers can sacrifice a bunch of fps if it comes to that, but they should know why, and they should have an otherwise working game. If everything gets to work on a SteamDeck, that would be a huge booster in confidence. This one platform is a flagship of linux gaming not because it's better, but because it's a frame of reference we can use on other setups and distros.
Some games get better FPS since Linux runs with much less overhead. Mileage may vary, but a few games I play run better so far.
As encouraging as that is, I suspect it'll drop a it as the Deck becomes obsolete and while SteamOS or Bazite don't come pre installed with more machines. Microsoft has lots of money to burn to prevent Linux gaming from happening
Me getting a deck was the catalyst for me, and later three other people I know switching on our main rigs. They saw it worked for me, and that was all they needed.
Also the deck is kind of evergreen. The games that run on it aren't going to stop running on it. The same way people still play games on GBA or PSP, I don't see it becoming "obselete" the way laptops or phones do.
Same for me and everyone I know.
It’s borne out in the stats too, SteamOS is only 27% of linux use on steam. Mint increased in proportion this month as well. People are increasingly using it on desktops and laptops.

Wow, that is the surprising stat here
Valve and Lenovo released a SteamOS machine not long ago, and it showed marked improvement in performance over windows. Then people have been installing bazzite on the Rog Ally and reporting 30% fps gains on identical hardware over the "xbox optimized" W11. Microsoft might have money but I'm not convinced they have the competency to compete. They're trending towards digging their own grave in the portable market.
Nah, I know one person who has been asking me about my steam deck because they think it would be perfect to buy for games they play (older titles or indie games like stardew), and I know another person that just switched from windoes 10 to linux on their main PC because they have used a steam deck.
The steam deck is still relevant and it gives people the confidence and experience needed to consider switching to linux.
While I love my Steam Deck, I always give the caveat that it's best for 2D-rendered games. While it can run 3D games, it doesn't do it particularly well and has terrible battery life while doing so. Meanwhile every 2D game gets great performance and 3-4 hours of battery even on the oldest Steam Decks, and that's not going to change anytime soon

I know yet another person that has Steam Deck as their only gaming device and they play almost exclusively Skyrim on it.
Define "fine".
If your standard is 30fps, not particularly good latency, and 1.5hr battery life then yes, they're fine.
If your standard is 60 fps and >3hr battery, then no, they are not fine.
My preference is stable 60fps and >3hr battery, and I have yet to see a 3D game do that well

Seems like a you problem.
As much as people want to think otherwise, you are right, the rise is mainly because of the Steam Deck.
SteamOS releasing for desktops could be huge for Linux gaming, having a company like Valve behind a distro for gamers will help massively to tip the scales. I hope they go through with it.
