IIRC these are choir books. You put them in front of the choir gor everyone to see. It was cheaper than having a small book for everyone.

Maybe a very small choir? One in which nobody was significantly near-sighted?
But it does make sense I guess, before printing presses were more commonly available. Or something like that.

This is just the folio size section of any research library holding old books. There is nothing specifically Czech about that picture, it could have been taken in any research library in the world.
