Trump administration must fund SNAP payments during the shutdown, judges rule

Two federal judges ruled nearly simultaneously on Friday that President Donald Trump’s administration must continue to fund SNAP, the nation’s biggest food aid program, using contingency funds during the government shutdown.

It wasn’t immediately clear how quickly the debit cards that beneficiaries use to buy groceries could be reloaded after the ruling. That process often takes one to two weeks.

What? He won't be able to starve some kids? That takes all the fun out of it for him.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 131 points 4 days ago (6 children)

So they'll just deny the court order and delay action by appealing, then what?

[–] redlemace@lemmy.world 82 points 4 days ago (1 children)

What he always does ...... keep ignoring court orders untill rulled in his favour.

[–] Mirshe@lemmy.world 66 points 4 days ago

Pretty much this. It'll get appealed all the way to the SC, where Thomas will write a decision saying "actually all funding is at the President's sole discretion" and that'll be it.

[–] paranoid@lemmy.world 50 points 4 days ago

Then trumps famine will begin

[–] ChonkyOwlbear@lemmy.world 35 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Good. Appealing this will force him to take ownership of starving people. He will still lie, but maybe a few more people will see the light.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 27 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Anyone who hasn't seen the light by now never will.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 22 points 4 days ago (2 children)

You can't just lose hope, especially when things are getting worse and worse by the week.

It does take a long time for anything that the federal government does to actually affect your life or someone you know in a noticeable way. Lots of things might get slightly better or worse, but won't be directly attributable to government, like policies that affect the economy. Other things might get MUCH better or worse, but only for a few people at a time.

Especially if you're dumb, these things can be hard to notice. Some people don't believe us because we've been saying the train is coming for a year now and they haven't seen it. But when they do get hit by it, or they see someone close enough, well... it can start to get through to them.

And we need those few percentage points. It's important to get people to vote against this shit, assuming we still get to vote at all. Be aware that there's also levels of cheating in voting. If they do things that suppress the vote by 5%, with the extreme shit they're doing, we could gain more than 10 points.

Voting still matters. Even if they cheat.

Armed thugs in your city black-bagging people can happen quite suddenly.

Armed thugs in your city black-bagging people can happen quite suddenly.

I bet half the Trump voters won't believe it until they see it. Luckily we don't need all of them.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 days ago

I like you.

[–] Soulg@ani.social 15 points 4 days ago

The bulk of them won't but there's a constant little trickle of people realizing it each day

[–] ChonkyOwlbear@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

There's a lot of people who are living in a bubble of lies. Sometimes the truth breaks through. That's a chance to shatter the right wing media illusion.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Addressing the problem of the right-wing media outlets being allowed to brainwash people with impunity would be more effective.

[–] ChonkyOwlbear@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

Sure but we would have to be in control of the government to do that.

[–] BanMe@lemmy.world 19 points 4 days ago (1 children)

In this case the headline actually works to our advantage. It's clear that Trump is the one fucking with food benefits. Tomorrow, between that and the new healthcare exchange rates being out, he's going to be more unpopular than ever - even some of his base are going to have pitchforks.

[–] ski11erboi@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Exactly this. His starving base will see exactly how a ~~rouge~~ rogue president isn't good for the country now that it affects them.

He's not rouge, he's orange.

[–] tornavish@lemmy.cafe 16 points 4 days ago (1 children)

What do you think WE should do about it?

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 20 points 4 days ago (6 children)

Vote in 2026, flip the House, get a 67 Seat Democratic majority in the Senate, impeach him a 3rd time and actually remove him this time, followed by his mandated jail time on his felony convictions.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 2 points 16 hours ago

Dream on. That's using the badly, maybe irretrievably, broken system to fix itself.

Any effective solution will have to be outside the system.

[–] tornavish@lemmy.cafe 10 points 4 days ago (11 children)

You do know that none of that is going to happen, right?

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 23 points 4 days ago (6 children)

Well the question was "what do you think we should do about it", that's what I think we should do. 😉

It is a good question. Public servants who refuse to follow it will be risking personal liability. That is a big deal for mid-level government workers when people will die as a result of their action or inaction.

[–] Jumbie@lemmy.zip 47 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Who’s going to fucking make him?

We are no longer a nation of consequences and without those, the criminals ain’t stopping.

[–] brem@sh.itjust.works 13 points 4 days ago (2 children)

LEGAL CONSEQUENCES aren't the same as a pissed off hungry mob.

Even the big 'ol honkers with the red hats will roll up against lack of mac.

[–] Jumbie@lemmy.zip 17 points 4 days ago

I’ve seen neither and they are literally bulldozing the fucking White House.

That's funny. They will all sit around the table and laugh at "must fund". After the laugh they'll ignore it like they always do and find some other law to break.

Meanwhile everyone else will shake their fist fervently and come up with a neat slogan for a sign.

This might just convince more people that only Trump can save them, and the legislative branch only serves as an obstacle.

Feeding the poor in a very public way is a good way for authoritarians to build good will at very low cost.

Edit: I’m still all for continuing and expanding SNAP to be clear. No one should be hungry.

[–] kryptonianCodeMonkey@lemmy.world 27 points 4 days ago (3 children)

It should show that they had the funds all along and have to be forced to use them instead of using the threat of starvation as a cynical political lever. The truth is that MAGA Reps dont want the SNAP program funded, no matter what. They dont give a fuck about poor and hungry children, especially if they can try to pin the blame on Dems. They think poverty is a moral failing and the poor are just a tool to be used.

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 1 points 16 hours ago

They dont give a fuck about poor and hungry children

Oh, they do. They want them dead. And some of them want to molest them first.

Yeah but that would take intelligence. Plus he wouldn’t want to risk accidentally helping anyone besides himself.

[–] comeonitsnotlike@feddit.nu 10 points 4 days ago

Yup. He's gonna continue saying the democrats is keeping the government shut, while he is feeding them. Pathetic people fall for this idiotic bullshit. Then again; republicans are traitors.

[–] bitwolf@sh.itjust.works 31 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They should require they updates all the notices on the govt websites saying:

"The Trump Administration is now forced to fund SNAP despite their best efforts to blame the Democrats"

[–] mika_mika@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Is that all we can do now is fantasize about a just world? :/

[–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago
[–] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 25 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Ok, and WHEN this admin doesn't do it, what then?

[–] tornavish@lemmy.cafe 34 points 4 days ago (6 children)

Then that money gets sent to Argentina

Nothing to see here. They'll cry to their pet Supreme Court justices and this will be overruled.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 10 points 4 days ago

doing everything possible to avoid the epstein files of his sordid details. distract the COMPLICIT press from the BBB and the files.

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

40 million starving Americans might create 1789 France. The asswipe, Just Dumb, survived on government welfare programs to put food on his plate. Hypocritical POS.

[–] faythofdragons@slrpnk.net 12 points 4 days ago

I'm lowkey worried he's shortsighted enough to want food riots, because he thinks he can declare martial law and never leave power that way.

[–] nednobbins@lemmy.zip 7 points 4 days ago

Traditionally, corrupt governments rely on bread and games to placate the hoi polloi.

[–] 1985MustangCobra@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

tbh did have starving the American population on my bingo card this year. and the worst thing is the people who celebrate it because of some people not spending the money wisely (i agree that maybe buying junk food is a priority when on food stamps) but that according to them is the whole entire country, and lets be honest, its mostly black people they are targeting the most with their "grievances". That's the funny thing about these racist fucks, they think someone like me was born yesterday and can't see through their veiled racism.
